The clothes Beckett brought for me were sitting on the bed when I came out of the shower, neatly arranged like a little outfit display for an Instagram outfit of the day post. I stood there in my towel, staring at them, trying to understand what was happening in my life right now.

A denim maxi skirt, a white top, and a sage green longsleeve polo for a coverup. Then, beside them, a leather sling bag, where my phone and wallet could fit. I had only seen that YSL purse on influencers, wondering if a time would come when I could see one in person. And lastly, a pair of white sneakers in my correct size, of course; he’d gotten that right too.

I picked up the sneakers and turned them over in my hands.

He was infuriating. He was so, so infuriating. How was I supposed to stay mad at someone who brought me sneakers?

I got dressed slowly, partly because I wanted to savor this moment, and partly because getting dressed meant I was actually doing this. I let my hair down in waves around my shoulders. I dug through my tiny makeup bag and put on something light, and then I stood in front of the bathroom mirror for a long moment, looking at the stranger staring back at me.

She looked okay yet absolutely terrified.

Oh God,I groaned, shaking my hands, and I started pacing.

Back and forth, left to right. I was sure my sneakers were leaving marks on the carpet from how many steps I had taken. I kept stopping at the door and then turning back around. I was already building a whole argument in my head, whether this was a sane thing to do, or whether Beckett and I were being too fast. Then I would circle back to the day we first met, how rude she was, and to the day he first kissed me, a runaway, as if my mouth tasted foul.

Ahhh!I grunted, grabbed my bag, and stomped towards the door, gripping the knob. This was now or never.

Beckett was in the living room, long legs stretched out in front of him, phone in hand, looking perfectly relaxed in the way that only people who have never once in their lives been nervous about anything manage to look. But the second he saw me, he dropped whatever he was doing and stood up, as though he’d been waiting for this exact moment and didn’t want to miss a second of it.

His eyes moved over me slowly, and then he smiled.

You look beautiful,he said.

My cheeks grew warm immediately. I ducked my chin slightly and said, Thank you,and it came out more feminine tha should have, and Beckett just kept smiling at me like that was exactly what he’d been hoping to hear.

Let’s go?He held out his hand.

I took it without hesitating. And I was smiling too, a real one. Okay.

The city moved past the windows in a beautiful blur of colors. Beckett drove with one hand on the wheel, and his other hand joined around mine, the same way he’d held it the whole drive back last night.

I didn’t ask where we were going. This was my first time in this city, and I have no doubt Beckett knew he was around her. Hell, he could be taking me to a holeinthewall diner, or the cemetery for all I care, but I just know I would be safe with

him.

That got me thinking. When did I start trusting him like this? I wasn’t sure when it had happened.

He pulled off the highway, and I finally looked up to see where we were, and recognition settled in slowly.

I sat up straighter. What are we doing here?I turned to my date, utterly bewildered. I was sure he didn’t have a game today. He wouldn’t be taking me out if he did.

You’ll see,he said, the car slowing to a stop as he parked it.

He slid out of the car and opened the door for me. I was skeptical. And he saw my face, so he said, Trust me.His smile was hypnotizing.

I looked at the stadium, then back at him. Fine.

We didn’t go toward the bleachers. Beckett guided me through a different entrance, down a series of wide hallways. The stadium was too quiet, and our footsteps were the only sound. The lights overhead were dim. We were the only ones in this stadium, and it was starting to creep me out.

I followed Beckett without question; his thumb brushing over my knuckles was like a calming balm, his rubbing over this edge settling in my chest. Then we turned one final corner and stepped through an opening, and the whole world opened

  1. up.

The field.

The diamond lights illuminated the grass, and the lines making the diamond where batters run to score. Down here, everything was magnified. The bleachers were larger than life, almost intimidating, as I remembered how many people this stadium could accommodate. The field looked endless from where we stood.

So this is how the game looks from a player’s POV.

As I took in everything before me, that’s when I realized why Beckett asked me to trust him. In the middle of the field, a

able for two was lit by candlelight.

I couldn’t speak. All I could produce was a muffled gasp. I couldn’t do anything except stand there and wonder what this man saw in me. I was no one special, nothing special too, but he did all of this for me? Like, why?

Beckett was watching me; that smirk on his lips told me this was exactly what he was expecting to see. Surprised, touched, and happy.

On my periphery, a man in an Amber Wolves cap, black shirt with keys dangling from his belt, walked towards us. His was friendly, and when he reached us, he handed Beckett a bouquet.

Thanks for doing this, Gary,Beckett murmured as they shook hands.

Don’t mention it,” Gary replied. So this is the woman you can’t stop talking about, huh?He teased Beckett, then he looked at me. Don’t make this too easy on him, yeah?

I giggled. I won’t

The place is yours for the night, Hale. Rick is on duty. He’ll be wandering around, not watching you two enjoy your dinner.

Beckett laughed heartily, and they exchanged a few more words. My heart was pounding so loudly that I didn’t hear them

anymore.

Once Gary left, I turned to look at Beckett.
