Chapter 168

For someone whose job requires a lot of time on the road, this was probably the first time I was leaving with a heavy heart.
I spent almost half an hour just standing over Andi’s peaceful sleeping figure in our bed, my heart gaining cracks as seconds ticked by. I watched the slow rise and fall of her chest as she breathed, the strands of her soft brown hair splayed over the white pillow. God. How badly I want to get under the sheets and pull her in my arms again.
Leaving her was something I had to endure. I wanted to tell her about Miguel, about my plan to go back to Hawthorne Bay to interrogate him, but I believed she would be safer if she were in another city far from that bastard’s reach.
Of course, I wouldn’t leave her unprotected. Lila will accompany her today. My sister made me grovel just to hear her say yes, when in reality, we both know she loved spending time with Andi and would want to know every detail about our date last night. Then I also asked Cole to lend me one of his men to keep Andi safe. I know it’s a little over the top, but I’d rather overprotect Andi than have her in danger again.
A heavy sigh left my chest as I dragged my feet out of the room. Then I scribbled a message for Andi on a notepad saying I would be back tonight and how sorry I was to have to leave so early in the morning.
eft it on the kitchen counter along with a stem of red rose, then I exited the penthouse before I even
nged my mind.
I spent the forty–minute flight back to Hawthorne Bay counting the growing distance between Andi and me. We had just gotten back together, and these people just won’t stop pulling us apart. Whoever was finding Miguel and Sloane is someone with money and connections.
the know that I am part of the Maldini Family? Sure, I wasn’t blatantly announcing it to the public, but
ecret either. And if he does know about that fact, doesn’t that scare him just a little bit?
Who the fuck is this man stupid enough to mess with me?
It was six in the morning when the car pulled in front of After Hour. Cole was behind the bar, white dress shirt open at the collar, sleeves rolled to his elbows, his hands busy making a margarita.
Remnants of last night were still evident at the club’s main hall. Three of Cole’s staff were mopping the floor, picking up trash, and wiping tables and chairs. The lights were on, making the entire place look like a regular restaurant with an empty space in the middle, all the glamour of the club dismissed.
Cole slid the margarita across the bar before I even reached the stool. His grin was toothy, freaking too bright for my pulsing head.
I sat down and accepted it, because what else was I supposed to do? I have been on a very unhealthy diet of

whiskey since two in the morning, and sipping margaritas before breakfast was not as bad as it looks from my
point of view
“Did you hear from Marko?” I asked.
Marko was the guy who was supposed to play bodyguard to Andi. Since it was on short notice, he needed seo hours to get to the hotel.
“Yup, about thirty minutes ago Cole was already pouring a second glass for himself. And yes, he’s staying reat of sight.” He added the last part before I could open my mouth, not even looking up. “Yes, he knows you will have his head on a silver platter if someone touches a strand of Andi’s hair?
I wrapped my hand around the stem of the glass, grunting “Good”
Cole was in that kind of mood that whatever I said, no matter how grumpy I had been, he wouldn’t wipe that smile off his face. He made himself a drink, leaned against the counter, and raised his glass toward me for a cheer. He was waiting, eyebrows lifted, still wearing that insufferable half–smile on his face.
I sighed as I picked up the margarita and knocked it back in one go. Cole clinked his glass against my empty one with great satisfaction and drank his at a civilized pace, like a man who had won something
“Feel better?” he asked.
“No.”
“Didn’t think so.” He set his glass down and pushed off the bar. “But I know something that would make you feel better, couz.”
We went through the kitchen and back into the storage room. Then we walked past the shelves stacked with liquor from the good old barrel of beers to the expensive wines. Cole stopped in front of the vegetable shelf. He scanned the side of the shelf, and the sound of locks unhinging thumped.
I know about this place, but I had no interest in being here until a week ago. This was the second time I climbed down the stairs to the basement and trudged through the well–lit hallway. The air was cold, and the place was chilly. Most people who came to After Hours had no idea it existed.
That was the entire point of the club: to conceal my cousin’s other businesses.
“Is Matías still here?” I asked as we passed the series of doors.
“Where else would he be?” Cole said.
“Is he talking?”
“Not to me.” Cole’s tone was dry. “I don’t think he likes me very much.”
He said that with pure sarcasm.
“You and me both,” I commented with the same fake enthusiasm.
