Chapter 19

-Andi-

I was in the middle of cleaning the house when my phone chimed with a message.

Unknown number: Lunch? Girl date. No arguments.

10 vouchers.

I frowned. Is this another form of scam? I didn’t get messages like this because I didn’t have any friends, nor anyone who would ask me out for a date or a girl date.

And my verdict? Yup, definitely a scam.

I ignored it and kept sweeping the floor of our tiny home. Mom was at the back of the house, tending her mini garden. The echo of her hum was music to my ears.

My phone chimed againanother message.

Unknown number: Are you ignoring me?

I glared at the message, reading it twice. What kind of scammer was this? I almost dropped my phone when it rang.

Unknown number flashed on the screen. I debated answering it, but since I had free time today, I wanted to pick a fight with a scammer, so I answered the call.

Who-

Andi, why are you ignoring me?Siobhan’s perky tone filled the line.

Oh, Siobhan?I gasped, glad that she cut me off, or I might have said something I would regret. But why was her number unknown? I saved her phone number in my contacts. She was even on speed dial 2.

Yes, it’s me,she sighed.

Uhm, sorry-

Ohhhh, she gasped, remembering something. I’m texting you on the company cell. Haha, my bad. Sorry

I could imagine her rolling her shoulder in a shrug, so I giggled. I was starting to wonder if you were a scammer

She giggled. I’m too hot to be a scammer, silly, but my invite for lunch is definitely not a scam. I’ll pick you up in thirty she said without pausing, playfully commanding me.

I’ll ask Mom-

I will ask her myself,Siobhan murmured, definitely rolling her eyes because she knew I was only making excuses. Seg you! Then she ended the call.

I blinked at my phone, biting my lower lip, then my stomach caved I had never been on any girl dates. What slid I even wear, so I wouldn’t look like Siobhan’s maid? Siobhan didn’t mean to intimidate me, I knew that, but she was too good looking to be considered my friend.

Andi!Mom poked my nose. She was smiling weirdly at me when I looked at her.

What?I blinked at her.

What happened? You look like you’re holding the world in your handsshe asked, taking the broom from me and

continuing my work.

Someone asked me for a girl date, and I don’t know what to do,I blurted out the truth.

Girl date?Mom echoed. Who’s your friend?

See? This was what I was talking about. Even Mom was surprised to hear someone asked me out for a girl date because I didn’t have any friends. I barely had time to shape my eyebrows, much less make friends.

Just someone I met at work,I said, my shoulders falling. I’ll just tell her I’m busy. I have tons of things to do here Caleb didn’t even make his bed!

Honey,Mom laughed at me, clasping her frail hands on my shoulder. You should find something to wear. That’s a start

I stared at her, searching her face for any pun, and found none. Was she really telling me what I thought she was telling me?

She saw the indecisiveness on my face. It was so loud she could hear it from a mile away. She reached for my hands, her rough ones covering mine in motherly warmth. She gazed at me with the same blue eyes that stared at me without judgment. Mom was the only person in this world who saw me for who I really was.

I’m happy you’re finally living your life, Andrea, she said, pushing my hair out of my face so she could trace my jawline.

It’s just lunch, Mom, no big deal,I said, pushing the emotions from crawling in my throat.

Mom’s eyes watered, her wavy brown hair tied in a low bun framing her angelic face. The wrinkles of worry adorned her cheeks. She must have been so worried about me.

It’s lunchlunch that had been long overdue, honey, she said, her voice cracking.

We both knew this wasn’t just lunch. This was life making its way into my world. For years I had been so focused on earning money so we didn’t die of hunger that I had forgotten how to be human. That I needed to connect with people, to be seen and to be treated like a living being.

You’ll love her,” I said. She’s the one who gave me this job.

Tears gathered at the bottom of Mom’s eyes. I know. Go and get ready. Wear something nice.”

I nodded. Okay, Mom, okay. I’ll go on this girly date.

And I didn’t regret my decision. Siobhan had been a really great company. We talked about everything under the sun, but never about my work at the estate. I’m grateful that she kept the conversation light and comfortable.

We had lunch at a mall food court, and she allowed me to buy her food. We split the bill and even had ice cream for dessert Then she demanded we shop for new clothes. Just a mere casual invite, not because she noticed how old my clothes were

I was surprised that she knew a drift store: Siobhan struck me as someone who bought only brand new clothes that were not on sale. I guess I shouldn’t have judged her just because she looked classy

She found a cute vintage skirt, and she was like a kid on her birthday who received a pony as she went inside the thing room. I can’t wait to try this on!

I giggled, slumping down on the couch, waiting for her with my hands full of her purchases

This was really nice. I’m glad Mom convinced me to go. I was having a really great day. It had been too perfect, almost suspiciously perfect. It felt like I was living another woman’s life because days like this usually didn’t belong to people like

Is this my life now?

I sank deeper into the couch, my shoulders relaxed. It felt strange, like my body didn’t know how to behave without tension. Then a weird prickle crawled up the back of my neck, but I ignored it.

I was almost believing in this dream of peace until someone I didn’t want to see walked inside the thrift store, a face- splitting grin on his face.

Andi? I thought that was you.Carter said, his eyes alight as he walked to where I was sitting.

My stomach dropped so fast my knees nearly buckled. Images of his betrayal came rushing back, sharp and unwelcome, a tsunami washing away the calm that I had basked in for two seconds.

The hairs all over my skin rose to attention, not from excitement but from fury. Every muscle in my body tensed as I braced for impact. That shiteating grin can’t be good. I kept my composure, though. I won’t let him see how his presence was still affecting me. Go away, Carter.

What? Don’t be a snob, Andi,he said, opening his arms as if to gesture how happy he was to see me. I’m really happy to see you. You weren’t returning any of my calls.”

My blood boiledthe nerve of this man to act as if we were friends.
