Chapter 191
-Andi-
“Are you sure this is what you want to do?” Cole asked for the nth time.
I looked up at the hotel where I plan to stay tonight. It was a public place, and nobody would know that I would be here apart from Cole. Yes, I am running away from my problems. Can anyone blame me for doing so?
Beckett just messaged me that he’s leaving the stadium and is on his way to the house to spend dinner with me. I had already turned off my phone in case he tries to find my location.
“Just for tonight,” I said. “I need time to think.”
Honestly, I was afraid to leave Cole’s car. This was gonna be my first time in a hotel, alone. I reckoned that doing something out of the ordinary would cut through the tension this day had dropped on me.
Cole scanned the entrance of the hotel. His mind gears worked to assess the situation before him.
This wasn’t a five–star hotel, but there was a restaurant on the ground floor. I had been here once to do a delivery, so I wasn’t really a stranger to this place.
“I will only do as you ask,” Cole murmured. “But I will have one guy parked in front of this hotel for the night.”
“That isn’t necessary,” I said flatly.
Cole examined my expression, then pursed his lips. “I will still do it without your permission, you know.”
He was just informing me of his plans, but I prefer that he hadn’t told me. I hate knowing that someone had to play security guard on me just because I need time to think.
“Cole-”
He shook his head, dismissing my refusal. “You’re not just a regular girl anymore, Andi. I understand you need time to think, but no matter how you feel right now, you’re part of the Maldini family.” He reiterated the truth one by one, facts that I cannot deny or run away from anymore.
I pressed my lips on a hard line, bristling because Cole was just being reasonable. I wasn’t married to Beckett when I got kidnapped, and being Mrs. Beckett Hale only put a target on my back.
“Fine, but can you assign two of your men so they can go for coffee breaks or take turns napping?” I genuinely raised my concern, and Cole got that look where he was pursing his lips side to side to stop a smile from tearing through his face.
“What?” I groaned. “Did I say something funny?” At that point, I was already glowering at him because his reaction was kind of insulting. My concern was genuine. Why was he controlling his laugh?
Pe shook his head, not to say no, but to shake whatever it was that he found funny. “My… my men are trained to stay awake for a week, Andi.” His tone was caught between laughing and concern.
I blinked, trying to figure out if he was joking or telling the truth. “For real?” I wanted to know.
Chapter 191
He nodded, looking ahead of us towards the black SUV It didn’t stand out among the cars parked on the street, but, as though the driver knew Cole was looking in their direction, the flasher blinked thrice
“Is that them?” I asked, needing to be sure.
Cole hummed, and questions popped up in my head. How the hell did they get here so fast, or did they just follow Cole around like paparazzi?
“One of these days,” Cole murmured, “If you decide you want to know more about the family. I’ll show you just how real they are.”
My stomach twisted because of what he said. Deep in my heart, I really don’t want to do anything with their family business or secrets, just like what I told Beckett.
“One day… maybe,” I answered Cole and reached to open the door. I gripped my messenger bag, ready to slip out of the car when Cole grabbed my hand.
I turned to him. He simply sighs and drops his hand from holding me. “Beckett…. Whatever he said or did, he only wanted to protect you.”
A solemn wind swept my hair. “I know. I wouldn’t have married him if I wasn’t sure of that,” I admitted. not because I wanted to defend Beckett, but because that was the truth. “But everything that surrounds him, I’m not sure about that anymore.”
Nana Lucy’s words rang in my head again. I jumped into this without knowing how deep the water is, and I can’t blame anyone apart from me.
Understanding dawned in Cole’s blue eyes. “He hasn’t cared for anyone before, only you, Andi.”
A soft laugh escaped me because I couldn’t believe that Cole was a great wingman. I am already married to his cousin, but I appreciate that he’s trying to fix this for me.
I offered him a smile and slid out of the car. If I stayed longer, I fear that Cole wouldn’t need another second, and he’d convince me to go back home now.
I watched him drive away from the hotel, slide a glance at the SUV across the street, before going inside the hotel.
I booked a room for the night and asked if they could provide a change of clothing for the night along with the room service.
Four months ago, I could barely pay for Mom’s medicine. Now, I paid for this hotel in cash, still in disbelief that I could pay for a night at this kind of place just on a whim.
Once I got my key, I didn’t head straight for my room. Instead, I went to the hotel restaurant to grab dinner. The place wasn’t jam–packed, and I easily found a spot near the floor–to–ceiling glass window.
