Chapter 28

Before I could answer Lila’s request, the sound of stilettos tapping on the marble floor drifted from the living room. Siobhan swept into the dining area like a ray of sunshine.
“Gosh, I’m sorry I’m late,” she hushed, greeting Beckett’s mom with a kiss on the cheek, then Lila, then me. “How are you doing?” she whispered.
Relief washed through me so fast I almost sagged. Thank God. At least someone here wasn’t a stranger–because Beckett didn’t count. From the solemn look on his face, I doubted he had wanted me here to begin with.
“I’m good,” I said, grateful for the distraction.
Lila rose from her seat, her lithe hands curling around my shoulders as she guided me toward the empty seat between Beckett and Siobhan. It was the kind of gentle manhandling only a little sister could perfect.
“I… I still have things to do,” I tried, but Lila shushed me with a single flick of her hand.
“Breakfast first,” she declared. “Work later.”
I looked at Siobhan helplessly. She only smiled and nodded, the traitor.
I squared my shoulders, exhaled, and sat. Running wasn’t an option–not with Hale women blocking every exit.
“So, how was the ride here?” Siobhan asked brightly as she piled food onto her plate. Vivian and Lila eagerly launched into stories about their morning drive to the estate.
To my surprise, breakfast wasn’t the nightmare I had braced for. Not once did I feel like a stray dragged in from the roadside. They spoke to me–not over me, not around me–and something warm cracked quietly open inside my chest.
“How about you, Andi? How is your stay here at the estate?” Vivian asked, her tone soft enough to make me forget this was her son’s mansion, not mine.
“It’s fine,” I said quickly. I wasn’t about to mention how Beckett made me work my ass off on day one… or how he made sure I understood I wasn’t welcome. “Basil and the dogs have been really kind to me,” I added before I could stop myself.
I froze. There was a dragon beside me, ready to unleash fire.
Vivian snorted first. Then Lila hollered. Then Siobhan burst out laughing.
My checks burned as Beckett shot me a glare sharp enough to slice through steel.
“See that, big bro?” Lila said, recovering from her laughter. “The dogs are much more welcoming than you.”
“I… I didn’t mean it like that,” I rushed out, but the damage was done. Beckett exhaled a long, simmering breath and sipped his coffee like he was trying not to crush the mug with his bare hands.
Throughout breakfast, he kept to himself. Quiet, controlled, and dangerous in the way he could shut down a room with silence.
“I know what you mean, Andi,” Lila said. “Imagine growing up with him. He didn’t like having me around either” I could picture that tiny Lila trailing after a grumpy mini–Beckett. It made me smile, which I immediately forced down.
But still… the feeling lingered–a tiny, unfamiliar sense of belonging.

When the plates were cleaned off, and coffee warmed our hands, I stood automatically. “I’ll take the dishes,” I offered, collecting plates.
Lila’s hand touched mine lightly. “Wait,” she said with a smile that felt like she knew a secret I didn’t. She shared a loaded look with Siobhan–one that sank unease deep in my gut.
Before I could demand an explanation, Vivian cleared her throat, posture straightening.
“So,” she began, tapping the rim of her cup, “Grandmama Lucy is celebrating her birthday tonight.”
The air shifted. Everyone looked at me like I was the guest of honor and not a maid.
“Andi is welcome to join,” Vivian added warmly.
“No,” Beckett said instantly–cold, firm, absolute. “She’s not going.”
Oddly enough, I felt relief. Breakfast was one thing. A rich family birthday party? A whole other nightmare.
“I can’t go,” I echoed lightly. “I’ll be doing laundry tonight.”
I picked up the last plates–grateful for any excuse to move–just as Siobhan caught my wrist, stopping me from creating a teetering tower of dishes.
“Grandma Lucy wants to meet you,” she said gently.
“What?”
“What?”
Beckett and I blurted at the same time–his voice filled with disbelief and annoyance, mine pure shock.
My heart thudded once, sharp and heavy. “Me? Why?”
Siobhan’s smile tilted knowingly. “She heard what Beckett did last night at the trailer park. She… well, let’s just say Grandma Lucy is a force of nature. And when she wants to meet someone, there’s no stopping her.”
Lila nodded. “She asked about you specifically.”
“No,” Beckett snapped. “I knew you two were up to something.”
“Three,” Lila corrected, unbothered by his murderous stare. She pointed at Siobhan. “Actually, four if you count Nana Lucy In this family, you’re powerless, Bek–bek.”
It was becoming painfully clear that the Hale family was run by women–tenacious, graceful, unstoppable women. And if Grandma Lucy was anything like them, she probably ruled the entire bloodline with a smile and a raised eyebrow
“You’re going. Andi,” Lila said, batting her lashes. “It’s going to be fun. I promise.”
“I… I don’t have anything to wear,” I said quickly. It wasn’t a lie–I genuinely didn’t–but it was also my last hope of escaping.
“Bonnie,” Lila said, already plotting, “you and I are going shopping today, yeah?”
“But I have work to do…” I trailed off helplessly, looking at Beckett.
I needed him to back me up. To say no. To shut this down. But his jaw was locked, eyes dark, shoulders tense–he looked one second away from punching the dining table in half.

He didn’t answer. Instead, he shoved back his chair and stormed out of the room.
My stomach twisted.
“Can I say no, Siobhan?” I whispered to the only friend I had here.

She shook her head, face sympathetic. “Nana Lucy will have you kidnapped if she needs to, Andi. I’m sorry.” She stood and squeezed my shoulders. “I promise I’ll be with you the whole time.”
I didn’t know what to do with that–didn’t know what to feel. Gratitude? Panic? Suspicion?
All three tangled inside my chest, tight and confused.
