Chapter 35
-Andi-
My cheeks were on fire, but Beckett’s cheeks were the same. I don’t think I had seen him this red before. Sweaty, sur never this beet red.
“This is enough, Nana,” Beckett recovered, standing taller as he walked inside the study. “Andi, we’re going home.”
Home. This was the second time he had said that line to me. And this one felt so natural that I almost believed the fa that his estate was now my home too.
I blinked at Beckett. It only took him five long strides to reach me. With his big hand, he reached for my wrist and pu up from my seat. I gripped the glass I was holding, its contents almost emptying onto my dress.
“Sir!” I gasped, my gaze bouncing to Nana Lucy, who was also rising to her feet. Then the double doors swung open, revealing the same guy who had helped us down from the limousine earlier.
The guy in the sharp suit wore the same composed look despite taking in the situation inside the study. Beckett was a angry bear, me, a fragile, confused lamb, and Nana was a lioness who didn’t look bothered by what was happening in f of her.
“Yes, Prim?” Nana asked, her tone poised, and the laughter I had heard from her before was long gone.
Prim cleared his throat and clasped his hands together. “Ms. Vivian asked me to inform you that the program will be st soon. She asked me to fetch you back to the courtyard.”
“Very well,” Nana Lucy said. “Where is Cole?”
“I’m here, Nana,” Cole materialized at the door, as if he had been there all this time, listening to what was happening ins
this room.
I narrowed my eyes at the traitor. He smirked at me, then at Beckett, then raised an eyebrow at Beckett’s hand on my wr
My cheeks turned redder than before. I snatched my hand from Beckett’s grip, smoothing it down my dress as if his han were dirty. Beckett pursed his lips at me, his eyebrows knitting together. I lowered my gaze, avoiding eye contact.
“What the hell are you doing, Andi?‘
“Cole, take care of Andi. Make sure Beckett doesn’t take her home until she eats a slice of my birthday cake.” Nana Lucy sa winking at me.
“What? No, we are going home,” Beckett protested, but Nana Lucy’s narrowed gaze answered him.
“It’s my birthday, and Andi is my guest,” the old lady said “Is this what your grandfather taught you
Like a child, Beckett pouted his lips, fists clenching as he answered, “No”
Nana Lucy tipped her chin up “Be a good boy and entertain my guest, will you? Let Cale take care of Andi.”
“Andi?” Cole voiced. He was already inside the room and offering me his hand
“Ohh, okay,” I said, grateful that Cole was taking the away from Beckett. He looked like he was the second away hom exploding
We followed Nana Lucy toward the Courtyard. An MC was now in the middle of the stage murmuring compliments about

Chapter 25
Lucia Maldin, her life’s work, and her legas
Cole and I parted ways with Nana Beckett was escorting his grandmother to the front of the stage while Cole whisked toward Siobhan and Lila’s table. The two were both surprised to see me with Cole.
“Cole?” Lila gasped. “I didn’t know you were coming Lila’s voice gathered onlookers from the other tables, but she da mind. She rose from her seat and gave Cole a huge hug
“I wouldn’t miss Nana’s birthday for the world” Cole chuckled embracing his cousin back
“Nana will disown you if you miss her birthday,” Siobhan said, greeting Cole with an air kiss on the cheek.
That’s so damn scary.” Cole cajoled You look good, Bonnie.”
“Still the sweet talker, I see,” Siobhan said, playfully narrowing her eyes at Cole. “And why are you with our friend Andi? put a heavy emphasis on the word friend. It sounded like a warning for Cole to stay in line and not mess with me.
I didn’t know when or why Siobhan and I became this close, but she was my first friend since I started working for Beck She’d been my constant defender–from Beckett, to Carter, and now, Cole
“Nana told me to kidnap her, and now she instructed me to be her bodyguard.” Cole said, making himself comfortable i the chair beside mine.
Lila and Siobhan looked at each other meaningfully, the MC’s voice a background hum to their silence. People applaude something the MC said, but we were in our own bubble at our table.
“May I sit with you guys?” A familiar voice echoed from behind me. Jace, looking handsome in his blue dress shirt and su pants, approached us, a drink in his hand. “Help me before that chick kidnaps me,” he said, pointing to the right with a si
eye.
Siobhan snorted and made room for Jace beside her. The three of us girls were in the middle of the round table, with Jace and Cole on each side, facing the stage.
Never in my wildest dreams have I ever thought of this moment, that I’d be dining with people like this four. And they do even consider me lower than their status in life, but more like a friend… a companion. Their equal.
You poor big baby,” Siobhan joked, patting Jace’s shoulder. The latter groaned and sank down on his seat so low it looked hilarious. Jace was a big guy. He’d still be found even if he hid under this table.
“So tell me, what did Nana want with you?” Lila asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Siobhan leaned in closer, trying to listen hard to what I was about to say.
“Nothing,” I said. “She just wanted to know if I was working for Beckett because I liked him or wanted to trap him in a narriage.”
Siobhan and Lila blinked at each other, once again exchanging meaningful glances.
“What did you say?” Lila asked, excitement glowing in her eyes. She was like a kid waiting for a cookie from the jar.
My lips pursed. “What do you think? I said the truth, that we could barely stand each other’s presence.” I shivered. “Like, ikkkk. Me? Having romantic feelings for my arrogant boss?”
was expecting Siobhan and Lila to be happy for me. I think I passed Nana’s interrogation with flying colors, but the look of horror on their faces confused me. They slumped back in their seats, shoulders fallen.
Uh, did I say something wrong?” I quipped.

“No… No, Andi,” Lila said. “I think you will be my sister soon because of what you said to Nana.”
“Huh? What?” I snorted.
“Because I heard this story before,” Lila explained. “This is how Nana met our granddad.”
