Chapter 54
-Beckett-
I can’t tell her the truth. That Sloane might be behind the fake paparazzi and that those guys in the white van were positioned near her place of residence because Nana Lucy wanted to make sure her family was safe.
She will be furious if she finds out about all of this, and on top of that, she will have one more reason to stay away from me I don’t want that. I can’t have that, so I puffed my chest out and tilted my chin, lying straight to her face
“You saw that guy,” I said. “He’d been hiding here all along, waiting for you to come back. You don’t know what lengths these paparazzi will go to just to find a good story.”
She hesitated, mulling over what I had said. She turned to her mother, who was still breathing hard and as pale as paper. There’s a wet patch on the ground close to her feet from the watering can that she dropped.
I hate that I caused this. If Sloane were behind this, I would have a word with that woman. I made a mental note to check in with Cole as soon as I left Andi’s place. I will deal with that fake paparazzi myself.
“When was the last time you saw George?” Andi’s tone was calmer as she asked her mother.
Julie swallowed hard, sweeping her hands down her skirt, then she licked her parched lips. “Uhm… I don’t know,” she said. ucking the wild hair that escaped her buns behind her ears. “I saw him the last time you were home. You know me. I just mind my own business.”
Julie’s tone was a scorching knife shoved into my chest, and the claws of guilt pierced my soul. These people have a very simple life. All Andi wanted was to have a job that could support her family; now she’s tangled in my mess.
‘Have you seen that guy before?” Andi pressed.
Julie shook her head. “There are always people coming and going at George’s place.”
Andi pursed her lips, some dark crossing her face.
This George,” I butted in. “What kind of man is he?” I lowered my voice because one of Andi’s neighbors opened their door.
We were lucky we didn’t have an audience when the commotion broke out. Everyone must be in their respective jobs by now, and the lady who walked out of the house three doors down from Andi’s home sat on her rocking chair. She was watching us as if she had just opened the television, and the show was too damn good; she needed coffee as she watched
Andi and Julie shared a look. It was clear that this George guy was no ordinary man.
“Maybe we should go inside,” Julie offered, her voice wavering as she noticed the woman sitting on the rocking chair
Although Andi was hesitant, she sighed and walked towards their trailer house. I guess that was a cue that I was welcome to come in if I wanted to.
Julie’s smile was still sweet, but it wasn’t hard to notice that the circles around her eyes had darkened compared to the last time I saw her. There’s also a frown on her forehead that won’t go away no matter how wide her smile is.
“Let’s go,” Julie said. “I can make waffles for you again if you like.”
As if on cue, my stomach grumbled. I haven’t had anything since I woke up. Not even a sip of water.
I chuckled shyly and scratched the back of my neck. “That would be lovely. And coffee too, please.”

“Sure, sure” She waved at me and went inside their house.
Andi’s home was humble. They have everything they need in this small space. A kitchen, a table, and they even have a couch. There’s a pillow at the end of the couch, which suggests that someone uses this as a bed at night.
It was cozy, but it felt a tad smaller when I stepped inside. Andi was leaning against the doorway of a room. It was the only room, and a small door to the bathroom. I wonder what their bathroom looks like.
“It’s small.” Andi said, her tone as sharp as a newly sharpened knife. “But I won’t leave this place?
I guess that was her answer to my ‘pack your bags‘ statement earlier.
Julie pulled the one chair inside for me. It felt like I was sitting in my fifth–grade chair all over again, but it was surprisingly
comfortable.
‘Besides, we don’t have another place to go,” Julie added. Her voice was softer than Andi’s. Then she turned around and opened the cupboards, searching for ingredients for her waffles. “Make coffee for your visitor, Andrea,” Julie said in her notherly voice.
Andi frowned at her mother, but the look on Julie’s face made her follow suit. “He’s not my visitor, Mom.
Is that the way to treat guests in our house? Is that what I taught you?” Julie can be scary when she wants to. I guess that’s a power only mothers have. Andi pursed her lips, and I can see myself in her whenever Mom uses her motherly voice on me.
No, Mom. I’m sorry,” Andi murmured, and I can feel her anger strangling me.
Hmmm,” Julie hummed. “And what is this your boss is telling me that you two are dating?”
–
Way to go, Julie. I really wanted to know how Andi would answer this question.
Andi’s shoulder stiffened. She looked over her shoulder, shooting daggers at me with her eyes. “It’s a long story, but I can assure you, it’s a one–time thing, Mom. It’s never gonna happen again.”
I made myself comfortable in my seat. ‘Never, huh,‘ I thought. That was one word you shouldn’t use on me, Andi. I will nake sure that date has a repeat one of these days.
‘But he’s your employer,” Julie sighed, then paid me a frown. “No offense, young man. It’s nice to know that someone like you would take my Andi out on a date, but isn’t this against your contract?”
Andi’s face pruned. “The long story is that his grandmother celebrated her birthday last weekend, and part of that celebration was an auction date. Unfortunately for me, I was on the lineup, and that’s when he bought that date. So… I didn’t really breach my contract.”
I nodded when Julie glanced at me again. She still looked unconvinced but let it slide, shifting into another topic. “And why did you say you are dating my daughter then, if it’s a one–time thing?”
It was fun to see her interrogate Andi, but now that I am in the hot seat, the fun is gone.
“Oh… because she resigned this morning, and I realized that I liked spending time with her, so I wanted to date her,” I said so casually.
Andi dropped the spoon she was holding; her shock and annoyance were palpable. “You!”
Julie had a secret smile as she turned back to the waffles and hummed. “Hmm, my Andrea is not an easy girl to deal with, young man. Are you sure you know what you’re getting into?”
“Mom!” Andi cried. “You’re seriously listening to him? He’s just trying to get under my skin!”

“Shhh…” Julie shushed. “The coffee of ‘your visitor‘ is getting cold. Give it to him now.”

I liked Julie the first time we met; I like her even more. This is where I started to see Andi, really see her. I saw her vulnerability when she was with her mom and brother. She had a tough exterior, but she’s a real softie on the inside. This made her stand out from all the girls I’ve met before. She’s real, and I like that. Really, really like that.
“Coffee, sir,” Andi placed the cup of coffee on the table. If her mom wasn’t here, I’m sure he had already poured that coffee over my head and watched the liquid scald my skin. Her glare could turn me to ash, but I still grinned at her.
“Thank you,” I said, and she huffed, then went back to her spot on the door frame, leaning on it with a glower.
I picked up the coffee, excited to have something warm in my system. But the moment I took a sip, the taste was so bitter; I choked on a curse. I had to spit it back into the cup as I coughed.
“Andi?!” Julie snapped at her daughter, but Andi was already laughing so hard that it rang through their entire house. Julie couldn’t do anything but pass me a tissue and shake her head. “Silly child. I’m so sorry. I’ll make you a new one.”
