No matter how much I refuse to admit it, Beckett’s warning about those paparazzi still rings in my head. I worry about Mom and Caleb’s safety, and the privacy of our family, which I wanted to keep. When that blurry photo of Carter and me circulated on social media, I got a taste of how gruesome people on the internet can be. I don’t even want to imagine the catastrophe that will wreck my life once that photo of Beckett and me hits the online stream.
But Mom’s suggestion of staying at Aunt Susie’s is just going to be as stressful as my face going viral online. Aunt Susie is Mom’s cousin who lives on the other side of town. I haven’t experienced living with her yet, but whenever she visits us here, all that comes out of her mouth is how we should live our lives the way she and her family do, how her life is better than Mom’s, and how Mom should have chosen the right partner. She’s better at everything, and we are way beneath her status in life.
Aunt Susie’s late husband left her a little fortune when he died ten years ago, and she had been living off his insurance like a queen since. I don’t even wanna go back to how she belittles my mom and our humble living, much less stay at her place just for a night. I’d rather work my ass off cleaning houses than ask her for help.
Mom blew out a long, worried sigh. Beckett’s words were affecting her more than she wanted to let on. She forced a smile and grabbed me a plate of waffles. “Eat before the food gets cold,” she said as she stood up and started to clean the mess on the kitchen counter.
When I was younger, I thought Mom was just meticulous in cleaning the house. But when I started to take on the role of a breadwinner, I realized that cleaning was her distraction. She needed something to do so she wouldn’t lose her mind. I know so because it’s what I do when my head is crammed with problems.
I pinned an annoyed glare at Beckett. Why does he think that his opinion matters in this family? He should have kept his mouth shut and left hours ago!
He tilted his head to the side as if he could hear my thoughts. “Why don’t you want to stay at your Aunt Susie’s?” He dared to ask.
My lips pursed as I chewed on Mom’s waffles. The food tasted bland in my mouth because of our unwanted guest’s question. “That’s none of your business.”
“Andi!” Mom sighed and shook her head at me. I had not given her a headache for a decade now. I had been a good daughter, but having Beckett around brings out the worst in me.
“What?” I sighed too. “It’s a family matter, Mom. It’s no concern of his.”
“You don’t have to be so rude. He’s still your boss,” Mom calmly reminded me.
“I resigned last night,” I explained. “I will talk to Paul later.”
Mom’s face turned solemn, worry coating her features, but she just nodded at me. Paul was the owner of the Old Town Tavern. He will have me back; I’m sure of that. But I will be working in the bar again, where drunken men forget the meaning of boundaries in their second round of beers.
At least now she gets what I meant by family matters. She didn’t want Beckett to know the problems we were

your life since you were sixteen, but I just want to know why you resigned so suddenly? You’ve only been working for that young man for two weeks, right?”
Now that Mom mentioned how long I worked for Beckett, I wanted to laugh at myself. I was only the latest in the long line. of house help who surrendered after two weeks of working for Beckett.
Was this what he really wanted to happen when he kissed me? Maybe he realized that I won’t give up, no matter how many chores he gave me, so he thought of a different tactic. If that’s the case, then he succeeded.
I know Mom worries about a lot of things. Bills, food, Caleb’s school, her medical needs were last on her list, so I squared my shoulder and tipped my chin up at her. “I will find another job that pays well, Mom. For now, I will go back to the Tavern.”
Her worry only intensified, but her words were the opposite of what she felt. “It’s your decision, Honey. I will support you always. You know that.”
I gave her a grateful smile. After everything I am going through, I’m so damn thankful that I always have a home to go back to, and a mother who will understand me even if I don’t understand myself.
“I’m sorry, but I have to go,” Beckett peeked his head through the open door.
I could’t stop the smile that broke out on my face. Beckett saw this, and his smile was amused. ‘What is it with this man? Can’t he see I’m glad he’s leaving?
“Oh, you haven’t finished your coffee yet,” Mom said.
I wanted to call her out, but I just let her be. She was too kind for her own good.
“I would love to, but I have something urgent to deal with,” he said, pressing on the ‘urgent‘ and sliding a meaningful gaze at
Is this urgent matter called the paparazzi guy? I narrowed my eyes at him. ‘What are you up to now, Beckett Hale? Why don’t you just disappear out of my life and go back to your glamorous baseball legend life?‘
“Maybe some other time?” he asked Mom.
“Of course,” Mom answered without missing a beat. “You’re always welcome here, right, Andi?”
I rolled my eyes and kept eating my waffles. The food was starting to taste better again now that Beckett had left our place.
Later that day, I went to the Old Town Tavern and spoke to Paul. He immediately hired me again, but not after laughing at me for thinking I could leave his well–paying waitressing job at the bar. “You won’t find another employer like me, Andi,” were his parting words as I left his office.
Paul made it sound as if he was doing me a favor and told me I could start right away, but when I went on duty that night, I saw the reality. He needs me more than I need him.
“You’re back,” Greg chimed when he saw me in uniform. His eyes lit up like a thousand fireworks, and relief made the knot on the back of his neck loosen.
“Yup, I made the ‘p‘ pop. “How are things?” I said, sliding up one barstool and glancing around the bar. Nothing much has changed. Greg was still here, and there’s a new guy behind the bar with him. Searching for a familiar face, I looked around the waitress serving tables. All of them are new.
“It’s like everyone followed you when you left,” Greg cajoled.

Taking the pun from his words, I giggled. “You’re still here.”

He shrugged. “Paul can’t fire me,” he boasted. There was a story behind Paul and Greg. They would go head–to–head at times, but it seems they are stuck together.
“Uh–huh,” I hummed, frowning when Greg sighed when he looked over my shoulder.
One of the waitresses walked towards us. She looked like she had all the time in the world, popping her chewing gum when she reached the bar.
“What’s up, new girl?” she said, tipping her chin at me. She had thick makeup on, her blond hair tied in a high ponytail, and she wore a denim skirt over the Old Town Tavern black shirt. Doesn’t she know that wearing a skirt in this bar is like asking those men to gape at her ass and legs?
I blinked at Greg, and he had a secret smile on his lips.
Being polite, I introduced myself. “Uhm, hi… I’m Andi.”
“I don’t give a shit. If you’re here to work, do your fucking job and stop flirting with the bar boy,” she spat and slammed her pad on the counter.
‘Bar boy? Flirting?‘ I nearly snorted at her comments, but I turned to look at Greg, and he looked like he wanted to slam the glass he was holding on this girl’s finger, impatiently tapping on the counter.
“I know you can’t take your eyes off me, Honey, but while you’re gawking at me, do this, will ya?” she spat at Greg. “I need this yesterday.”
I whisked a glance at Greg. He just shook his head and followed suit, ignoring my questioning gaze. I was gone for two weeks, and the bar’s working environment has changed drastically. The customers might be overbearing, but my coworkers. here were kind and friendly. I wonder if this chick had something to do with everyone else leaving.
“You,” she turned to me. “What are you still doing here? Go and waitress away.”
“Yes, ma’am,” I said, sharing a look with Greg. The latter smirked, then I slid down the barstool and looked toward the entrance, where people were starting to fill in. Tonight is going to be jam–packed because there’s a Hawthorne Bay Mariners game. Almost half the bar–goers tonight were wearing Carter’s jersey, but surprisingly, I don’t feel anything. His jersey no longer reminds me of the pain he caused me, which is really amusing.
The bar was dimly lit; the TV was on, and the sports anchor’s voice was filling the air. I pulled in a huge breath, ready to start waitressing away when I saw a familiar face walking through the bar entry.
In their twinning outfits of stetsons, crop top vests, short denim shorts, and boots, Siobhan walked hand in hand with Lila. The guys turned their heads to check them out, but two huge shadows were looming over the two stunning ladies who had just walked in. Beckett and Cole.
