Maid For Beckett Catching The Baseball Legend’s Heart novel Chapter 61

The van smelled of plush leather, nothing like the familiar masculine scent of Beckett’s SUV or the comforting chaos in Siobhan’s car. This one felt like an unfamiliar moving box, filled with quiet people, with only the radio’s music filling the gaps. There’s a driver in front of us and another guy in the passenger seat; both of them were stoic, as if they were robots driving this van.

I sat rigid on the back seat, my hands folded on my lap, the thin blanket still draped over my legs. Even the clothes I’m wearing don’t smell of the cheap detergent we have from home. This smelled of the laundry detergent the laundry shop

uses.

Each bump the wheels rolled over softly rattled the car, rattling my stillfrail body. There were throbbing aches in my body that I didn’t want to acknowledge yet, but it was the tension curling in my stomach that worries me the most.

It was bright outside, but the thick tint of the windows made it feel like nighttime inside. I watched the city outside, vague shapes and light bleeding through like a pale watercolor painting.

Cole riding in the SUV ahead of us intensified the nagging feeling in my belly. Beckett was hiding something from me, and from the way he never left my side since I woke up, I knew it was bigger than I could ever imagine.

Cole had been too quiet, too stiff in the hospital. And he climbed into the SUV without even speaking a word to me. That wasn’t the Cole I met at Nana Lucy’s birthday party. That Cole was charming, talkative, and friendly. This Cole with us was cold, distant, and on edge. He didn’t even look at me. Not even a smile.

Beckett sat beside me, close enough that our knees would have touched every time the car would quiver. He rested his hands on his thighs, shoulders squared, jaw tight. He hadn’t said a word since the driver put the car into motion.

I swallowed. Does Mom know I am being discharged?

Yes,Beckett said curtly. She will visit you at the estate tomorrow.”

Ohalright,I said, sinking into my seat and staring back at the window.

At first, I wondered why Mom didn’t see me today. I was hoping Mom would be outside the hospital. I needed her her calm. And now I hear from Beckett himself that Mom will be at his estate? Am I in a dreamland?

Stop overthinking things,” Beckett murmured.

presence;

II wasn’t,my voice was small and low because he was, in fact, correct. Was he reading my thoughts? When did he become

so aware when it came to me?

He hummed, as though telling me lying to him was useless. I sank deeper into my seat, cheeks warming up. Can we drop by my place?I asked, changing the subject, and also wanted to check in on Mom and Caleb.

It’s out of our way,” he said, confusing me. When did that ever become an issue for him? This van wasn’t a rental car, and he looked like he had all the time in the world. So, what gives?

I don’t have any clothes with me. I’ll just be quick,I insisted.

Your bag is in the back,he said, and I looked at the back row seat and found a duffel bag sitting there. I haven’t seen that bag before.

That’s not mine,I said because that duffle bag looked like it was brand new. The tag was still on, and it looked pretty expensive too.

1 swear he could hear my thoughts, and he gave me no loopholes to escape his estate keeping me on his estate, anyway? As my thoughts rushed a hundred miles an hour, the smooth like it had done this route a hundred times before. My gaze dried to the rearview The driver’s eyes flicked to me briefly, unreadable, then back to the road

Who are those men at the hospital?I asked quietly, still can’t help my mind from thinking things wen

Beckett’s jaw flexed.

Security

For who?I pressed.

His gray eyes finally lifted to mine. There was something carefully neutral in them like he’d already rehearsed For you.

A chill slid down my spine. For me? Why would I need security? I had this feeling that if it wasn’t the gay from the alleg, the paparazzi from George’s house was the reason for that security. I don’t need them

You do,” Beckett said calmly.

Why?

Because you have been a trouble magnet, Andi.”

The words didn’t sit well with me. Trouble magnet? Me?My voice rose. I am a nobody, sir. Maybe it’s you who is the trouble magnet, not me.

I leaned back against the seat, folding my arms across my chest, suddenly aware that I was picking an argument with my boss. Why did I ever agree to work for him again? I must be out of my mind.

Maybe,” he agreed with me, and that alone surprised me. I was expecting him to use his authority to shut me up again, or to make me do what he wanted me to do. But here he was, agreeing with me. And until I’m sure I am not the reason for this attack and the paparazzi, I will take care of you, got it?

That statement of his shut me up. There was something surreal about this man giving attention to me, much more declaring to protect me. What did that drunken guy do to my boss? Or was it the paparazzi? It’s like they awakened his protective obsession, and his obsession was me. I still haven’t decided whether I liked that or not.

The more miles we covered, the more claustrophobic this van felt. The silence thickened until my breathing became a struggle for me. I focused on the music on the radio. It’s a reggae singer I haven’t heard before. When the song ended, the radio DJ’s voice filled the car.

She was giving us the headlines of what’s trending online. What she said was passing through my ears like a whisper in the wind. I didn’t absorb any of it until she started a blind item about a baseball superstar being seen with a girl at the hospital.

It sounds familiar, but I could only hope she wasn’t talking about my boss and me. But the way Beckett’s jaw and hands were clenched, I knew it was a fool’s hope.

She kept dropping hints, then she murmured, Our source said that this baseball superstar hadn’t left the girl’s side since she was admitted to the hospital. Who could it be? Anyone who guesses right will receive a gift check, so comment your answers here on our social media pagerightnow.
