Chapter 63
-Andi-
“How bad is it?” I asked Lila once we finished eating lunch. She was doing the dishes, and I was still stuck in my wheelchair.
I kept insisting that I was fine, that I was feeling better, but there were three of them who told me not to do house chores for the entire day.
Vivian took an important phone call while Beckett went to his room, and Cole disappeared in the middle of the coffee jelly dessert. I feel like I could finally breathe now that Beckett wasn’t watching me with those pretty gray eyes like a hawk.
“What?” Lila deadpanned. Her gloved hand was oozing with white foam.
I was honestly surprised that she knew how to do the dishes. She gave off a spoiled Disney princess vibe, like someone who doesn’t know the difference between hand soap and dishwashing liquid.
“I heard it on the radio. They were talking about Beckett and me,” I said, because my phone died on me before I could open my social media accounts. Now I have to rely on Lila’s honesty because I have no idea whether my charge was in the duffel bag on the van’s back seat.
“Hmm,” Lila hummed. “It’s not that bad, honestly,” she said. “He’s been linked with celebrities and socialites before,” she explained. I think that was meant to ease the worry I am feeling, but why did it feel like she just tossed a knife in my chest?
Beckett was an eligible bachelor who played baseball. It shouldn’t be surprising that girls were flocking over him, but why did that thought leave a foul taste in my tongue?
“I mean, I don’t get all the fuss,” she shrugged. “He should have known this would happen when he went out in public with you.”
“Right?” I blurted out. My mind was struggling to make sense of what she meant by that. “I told him the exact same thing. I am a nobody. Why would they pay attention to me?”
“Oh… Oh!” Lila gasped, her eyes blown wide when she turned to me. “That’s not what I meant. Gosh. My mouth runs on its own.”
Now she was just confusing so I frowned at her. I actually like that she has the same opinion as me. This only meant that I am the rational one, and not Beckett.
I giggled without humor. “I totally get what you meant, Lila. There’s no need to worry or make a fuss.”
She shook her head, composing herself, bouncing back from whatever it is that she didn’t mean to say. “What I mean is Beck should have anticipated that this would happen when he went out with you. He is an attention magnet. There was once a time when they thought I was his girlfriend.” She grimaced and feigned gagging.
I giggled at that, and this time, it was genuine.
“You get what I mean, right?”
“Yeah,” I caught myself. “Not really.” She raised an eyebrow, so I explained. “He didn’t go out with me.
“Oh, that,” she murmured. “There were people at Nana’s party who knew you two would be on a date. It’s possible that someone from that crowd tipped off the media.”
I had totally forgotten about that because I had been too focused on what happened after that date. The kiss that made my life explode in my face. Just the memory of that kiss sent the butterflies in my belly fluttering, their wings prickling my

chest. I feel the heat blooming in my cheeks, and I’m just grateful that Life was Bovey with the dudes
“You think that’s possible?” I asked.
“Totally,” she nodded. “And Sloane was there too. She could be the one behind all of this, for all we koo
“Can she do that?” I stared blankly at Lila’s side profile, an unsettling feeling spiralled down my gut.
Lila shrug. “Its possible. She’s obsessed with Heck”
“Stop feeding her with your crazy ideas, Lila, Beckett’s voice crooned from the stairs. His hair was damp, and he changed into his usual fitted shirt and joggers. He looked a lot more like my boss now, a afle a ease. There was will decrease on it forehead, and worry shining in his eyes.
Lila winked at me and glared at her brother.
“You should hire another maid while Andi is still healing,” she berated Beckett like she was the older sibling,
“I can start working today,” I insisted, and Beckett dismissed my notion.
“I will take care of her. I don’t need a stranger in my home,” he stated as a matter of fact.
‘Stranger. I echoed. Does he consider me ‘not a stranger anymore? I think so. The smirk on Lila’s lips told me so.
“Hey,” Beckett turned to me. “Do you want to get some rest now?”
I need a lot more getting used to his concerned tone and questions about my welfare. He didn’t need to do this for me. As stubborn as it may sound, I can already walk and take care of myself. I didn’t want to be a burden to anyone since I am technically working for Beckett again.
“Oh, I’m just waiting for Mom,” I said.
Beckett’s face turned serious. “You’d better get some rest while waiting for her.”
I agreed with him and said goodbye to Lila and Vivian as I went to my room. Once I was alone, I stood from the wheelchair and willed my feet not to give up on me. The duffel bag from the van was already waiting on my bed. With slow steps, I dragged my feet to my room and started unloading the clothes from the bag.
They were all brand new. There’s no doubt that Siobhan and Lila went shopping for me again. So, I started to put them in the closet. If I decide I don’t want to stay here, I can just leave everything behind. These pretty and expensive clothes aren’t mine, anyway.,
My phone was still dead, and I don’t know at what point I had fallen asleep. Maybe it was because of the medication I had taken, because when I woke up, it was already dark in the pool house. I was on the couch, and I heard the dogs barking in the distance.
They have their own house at the back of the mansion. It was too far from the pool house, but since it was quiet outside, I could hear the echo of their barks.
My entire body was sore when I pushed off the couch. I rose with a groaned and my face crumpled as I rolled my shoulders. I rubbed the sleep from my eyes and walked groggily towards the bathroom to relieve my bladder. When the lights flickered on, they cast a soft glow on the entire pool house.
I sensed a shadow moving behind me before I could even walk inside the bathroom. I turned around, wondering if I was just imagining things. Then chills spiralled down my spine as memories of the alley came rushing back at me.
Fully awake now, all thoughts of relieving my bladder had been forgotten as I scanned my surroundings. My eyes need time
