Chapter 70
-Beckett-
Goddammit. Goddammit all to hell.
I knew I shouldn’t have taken Andi with me to the game. My team was playing against Carter Benette, and the chances of us crossing paths were huge. I thought the worst that could happen was Andi grilling me for not telling her the truth on our way home, but not this. This was a catastrophe, and I had to take Andi away from here as soon as possible.
An audience has formed a circle around us now. I was so engrossed in giving Carter a piece of my mind that I did not realize that we had gathered attention.
It was too late to save face. There were roughly thirty to forty phones raised toward us. I have a bad feeling some of them are live online right now. We have caused a scene, a very dramatic scene, and I felt Andi’s hand turning clammy as realization
dawned on her.
Her breathing became ragged, and her hold on me was tightening unconsciously. The color on her face went south, and she bit her lip, trying to hide how it trembled.
I thought I had saved her, but I have made things worse. I’m a fucking idiot!
“Hey, look at me.” I tugged on Andi’s hand. Her eyes were wild, and her fright was undeniable. She looked up at me with those big, blue worried eyes, and it was a sucker punch to my gut. “It’s okay,” I murmured.
She shook her head, swallowing hard. “It’s not, Beckett…” she mumbled, her voice so small, I hate myself even more for doing this to her.
My jaw clenched as I instinctively wrapped my arms around her again, shielding her from everyone in this cafeteria. “Stay away from her,” I spat at Carter and whisked Andi away from the crowd.
The people parted as I weaved through them. Andi’s feet moved on autopilot, following my lead. Siobhan was just coming out of the hallway, and the shock on her face made it clear how bad the situation was.
“What happened?” she asked, walking at Andi’s side. Siobhan and I were used to this kind of attention, but Andi isn’t. This isn’t part of her world, or her job description.
“We need to get her out of here,” I said through gritted teeth, removing my cap and stashing it on Andi’s head. I know it’s too late to delete every photo and video they have taken of us, but if there is anyone who can fix this, it’s Siobhan. She knew how to handle these kinds of things. She had been cleaning my mess for over a decade now.
“Okay,” Siobhan’s high heels echoed through the hallway as she matched my steps. We reached the basement parking lot safely, and I shoved Andi onto the passenger side of my SUV. I tossed my duffel bag into the back seat and secured Andi’s seatbelt.
“What do you need?” Siobhan asked as she gazed up at Andi.
“They recorded our conversation with Carter and Sarah. This will hit the media if it hasn’t already.”
Siobhan pursed her lips, understanding dawning on her at how shocked Andi was.
“I’ll see what I can do,” she said. “Drive safely.”
“I will.” Then I rounded the hood of the car and sped away from the stadium as if it were on fire.
Andi hadn’t said a word the entire drive home, and I can’t bring myself to break the protective wall she had surrounded

Kerself with She deserved peace and quiet more than anything right now.
When we reached the estate, I didn’t turn the engine off and just sat with Andi inside. I didn’t turn off the air con; I didn’t aminek the door. I let the engine’s hum fill the silence between us. I feel like once.we leave the safety of this car, the world’s chaos will crash us to pieces again.
I was barely making amends with Andi for kissing her, and now, this happened? How do I even win her over after this?
She was the first to move, unbuckling her seatbelt. “Thank you for saving me earlier,” she said, her voice calm and steady, as if her world hadn’t just unravelled before her an hour ago.
You’re thanking me?” I retort. “I should be apologizing for bringing you there. I knew he would be there.”
“Yeah,” she laughed without humor. “You should have. At least I would have worn a wig, a mask, or something.”
I turned to her with a frown. Is she trying to be funny? It’s enlightening that she could still throw a joke into this kind of
situation.
“You’re not mad at me?” I wanted to know. If this was her way of hiding what she felt from me, and then she would bolt out again in the middle of the night, I need to know.
She sighed, and her shoulders fell. “Mad? A little, but what can that do? My face must be all over the social media gossip sites again by now
1 clenched my fist around the steering wheel. “I will fix this.”
“You can’t. You know how internet footprint works,” she said so casually as if her privacy hadn’t just been ripped from her hands. She was so calm, and I don’t know if this was just the calm before the storm or if she is really this level–headed. “I just have to hide for a few weeks, wait for the next hot topic to overshadow this – that’s the best I can do.”
1 mulled over her response. How long will she be hiding, and why would she hide? She didn’t do anything wrong. Carter should be the one hiding away right now.
My phone rang, and it was Siobhan. Andi stiffened in her seat as we exchanged glances.
“Do you want me to answer that?” I asked her. I can handle this situation on my own. I don’t want to put more pressure on Andi, at least not tonight.
She nodded, her throat bobbing as she swallowed her uneasiness.
I answered the call and put it on loudspeaker. Siobhan’s clipped voice filled the car. “Beck?”
“Yeah”
“How is Andi?” Siobhan wanted to know.
“She’s here with me. We just got home.”
“Hi Andi butted in.
“Hi, babe, How are you holding up?” Siobhan softly asked.
“I’m okay. Andi lied.
If Siobhan sensed the tremble in Andi’s voice, she didn’t focus on it. “I can’t say I have good news, Andi.”

“Why? What happened?” I asked. Siobhan would never sugarcoat her news in this kind of situation. And the urgency in her tone made the knot on the back of my neck tighten.
“You were right, Beck. There were tons of videos taken in the cafeteria that went viral. The comments were not really the problem. People were actually happy to see you out with a girl,” she sighed. “The problem was, Carter was asked about what happened in the media con after the game. And he said-” Siobhan took a deep breath.
Andi clenched her fist in her lap as the pulse on her neck drummed faster.
“What did that fucker say now?”
“He painted Andi as the one who came up to him, and flirted with him, Beck.”
