Everything around me was heightened by the suspense of Beckett’s response. The loud ticking of the clock was a countdown to how this would go down, the steam of the coffee on our table, and the sound of Basil’s grass cutter in the distance. I wanted to focus on everything else besides the man sitting before me.
I blindsided him. I am guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and now I feel like a dick for doing this to Beckett. He didn’t do anything wrong to me. In fact, he had been kind and considerate of everything I wanted, and now I just attacked one of the people who had always been by my side in this whole ordeal.
He didn’t have to say a word. It was in the tiny crease in his eyebrows when Siobhan showed up here unannounced. Beckett had always been good at controlling his emotions, but I knew his tells. The tightening of his jaw, the way he chewed the food n his mouth, and the way he gripped the handle of his mug as he took a sip of his coffee. It was written all over his small gestures. I wouldn’t notice it if I wasn’t paying attention, like Siobhan, who made herself comfortable beside me and nunched down on her eggs and toast.
f we didn’t have a visitor, Beckett had probably pinned me down on this table already, demanding an explanation. But he hould know that Siobhan wasn’t here to be my shield. Not intentionally, that is. But I’m still grateful that there was an cebreaker in Beckett’s already glacial mood.
Andi is right. This setup will be better for everyone,” Siobhan said smoothly, turning to Beckett like she was just telling him I would be scorching hot today in the city. She was so oblivious of how things unfolded between us last night, and I can’t >ring myself to share how intimate we have been on the main door. “Andi will be working for me now. Just so we are in line with our story.”
Beckett’s eyes snapped to hers. “Isn’t she supposed to be my assistant?” His question was valid. I hadn’t really thought about how to explain this to him.
She is, but she will be based in my office. She will be coming up here every day to check up on you,” Siobhan clarified. “This will end the rumor about you two already living together.”
I stayed quiet, hands clasped in front of me, heart hammering. I’m really glad Siobhan was here to explain things to Beckett because she knew what she was talking about.
Andi will also be taking an online course,” Siobhan continued. “To certify her as my assistant. That way, no one can question her credentials–or why she’s in the position she’s in.”
She glanced at me then, a subtle reassurance in her eyes. “This benefits Andi long–term,” she added. “And frankly, it protects you too.”
Beckett passed glances between Siobhan and me; his suspicion was a sharp dagger pointed at Siobhan and me.
“When did you start planning this?” he asked. “And why am I only hearing this now?”
Oh god. I haven’t really thought about this, and when I called Siobhan last night. I was vague about why I want to stay with Mom and Caleb. And as if she could hear my thoughts, she saved me again
“This was my idea,” she said with a straight face. “I brought it up to Andi recently. She only gave me her answer last night
That was a lie, but Siobhan didn’t even bat an eyelash Sometimes, I’m scared of how good a liar she
Beckett still looked unconvinced. He was reading between the lines and dissecting my face for the truth
His jaw tightened, and he exhaled through his nose before nodding at me. “A word, in my office, now

I barely conceal my wince at the fright that spiralled down my spine. His tone was flat and deep, and it bore all the emotions he was trying to suppress.
“What’s the problem-“Siobhan chimed in, and I shook my head at her.
Beckett deserved an explanation, and I should give it to him. “Sure.”
Siobhan hesitated just a fraction of a second before nodding. She continued eating her food as I followed Beckett down the hallway to his office. The pump of my heart was louder than the screech of our shoes against the tiled floor.
Beckett’s office was pristine, just like the entire mansion. He had a variety of books on all aspects of life, from law to business to farming. The walls were the same as his room: gray, black, and wood. There’s also an unlit fireplace that occupies one wall. It felt like Beckett was going to interrogate me when he stood in the center of his office, arms crossed, and blazing eyes watched me close the door behind me. The moment it shut, the air turned stiff.
“What is this all about, Andi?” he asked quietly as he started my interrogation.
I swallowed and clenched my fist at my side. “What do you mean?”
He let out a low growl. “Are you running away again?”
Running away again? And then it hit me. The first time he kissed me, he woke up with only a letter waiting for him at the kitchen island. And this explains the hurt in his tone, that pinch of betrayal in his words.
“What? No…” I shook my head. “I’m not running away.”
If only he knew how much I want to stay with him for good. I got used to sleeping with him just within my arms‘ reach and waking up to make him breakfast.
He didn’t move. His eyes darkened. “Then what is this about?”
I took a breath. “This is me becoming the woman who’s supposed to be your girlfriend. His brow furrowed. “Me working for Siobhan was already part of the deal. We’re just making it true. My studying was my idea, and Siobhan kindly offered to advance my salary so I could enroll and study online.” I continued. “I’ll pay it back. I just–I don’t want anyone thinking I’m here because I’m living off your money. Or because I’m sleeping with my boss”
His shoulders loosened, but his eyebrows were still furrowed.
I’m doing this for myself. Please don’t be mad,” I said honestly.
Silence stretched between us. I clutched my hands together and fiddled under his perusing gaze
Then, quietly, he asked. “What about last night? Do you want out of our deal?”
My mouth moved before I could consider my answer. “No, I squeaked, my eyes growing wide as I realized what I had just admitted.
Something in Beckett’s posture cased, like he’d been holding his breath for so long and he could finally breathe. He took one step after another until there was no more space between us. Like it was only natural for him to hold the, his hands came up and cupped my face gently
“Then tell me,” he said, voice low, intent. “I want to hear you say it again.”
His thumbs rested along my jaw, drawing warm and steady, incoherent lines. His touch was so sensual and calming that it had my knees buckling. Then he guided my face to stare up at him, giving me no choice but to meet his demanding gare.
He wants reassurance, certainty, and to hear what I truly feel. He deserved this, and I deserved to be happy. “You can kiss me
