“You guys have zero taste! Just because she’s pretty doesn’t mean she’s a catch-don’t you know who she is? That’s Margaret, the biggest airhead in Capaville!”
“Totally! Word is she skipped school to run off with some random guy a few days back.”
“Look at that face. She’s probably into hooking up with very guy she meets.”
A group of girls snickered, their voices sharp with malice.
They were all dolled up: dyed hair, permed waves, bright lipstick, and neon nail polish. Trendy as could be -no trace of “student” about them.
“Margaret, you hick! Where have you been? You know I had to do my own homework without you around? Got yelled at by my dad ’cause of you!”
“Margaret, get over here and grab my homework! If you don’t finish it today, you’ll regret it!”
The one shouting was a girl with fire-red hair, a stud in her ear, and smoky eye makeup. Dressed in a leather jacket and pants, she oozed “gang leader” vibes-like she owned the place.
Her tone was pure command, like talking to a servant.
This was Ruby Leslie. Her family was in the mob.
Ruby herself was a total delinquent-smoking, drinking, fighting, getting perms… it was all routine for her.
She loved picking on people at school. Even though she was a girl, most guys were scared shitless of her.
Last month, she’d hacked a guy with a knife and sent him to the hospital. Her reputation for being ruthless was legendary.
Margaret had been on her phone since she sat down, like she was in her own little world. She didn’t even flinch at the shouts.
Ruby blew a fuse when she realized she was being ignored. “Margaret! Got a facelift and suddenly you’re hot stuff, huh?”
She stomped toward Margaret, ready to throw down.
Some guys in the class frowned. Normally, they’d stay out of it-old Margaret was ugly and hickish, not worth sticking their necks out for.
But now? Margaret was drop-dead gorgeous. Game changer.
Guys were visual creatures, after all. Watching a total babe get picked on? They couldn’t stand by.
Beautiful girls-especially stunning ones-naturally triggered guys’ urge to protect,
“Raymond, you gonna step in?” One guy nodded toward Margaret.
Raymond was the class boss-the top dog among the troublemakers. Plus, he was her brother.
Raymond’s expression had cooled down. He glanced at Margaret, his eyes dark, then curled his lip in disgust. “None of my business. I don’t know her.”

After she’d almost killed him, she might as well have been a stranger.
Ruby had been sneakily checking Raymond’s reaction the whole time. When she heard he didn’t care, she let out a silent breath of relief. Then she marched right up to Margaret’s desk.
The teacher, seeing a fight brewing, scrambled over. “Ruby, let’s talk this out. No need for violence!”
Ruby didn’t even glance at him. “Shut your trap if you don’t wanna get shanked after school. Mind your own damn business!”
The teacher clamped up immediately.
“Raymond, seriously? We’re not gonna help?” The guys grew anxious as Ruby balled her fists.
Raymond looked over. Margaret was still staring at her phone, like she was too scared to speak. His brows furrowed tight.
His gaze was complicated, but his tone stayed bitter. “Why bother? Did she beg for your help? Since when are you guys such saints?”
Raymond didn’t come to school often. He’d never been around when Ruby picked on Margaret before, so Ruby had never felt threatened by him.
But today
e was here-and she’d been nervous. Rumor said he disowned Margaret, but blood was blood.
Turns out the rumors are true. Raymond doesn’t give a crap about Margaret.
Ruby’s eyes turned vicious as she stared at Margaret’s pretty face. How dare this hick be so beautiful?
The other girls glared too, their voices dripping with jealousy. “This bumpkin’s not Raymond’s sister. She’s trash-she doesn’t deserve it.”
Another chimed in, “Clara’s our school’s real beauty. Pretty, gentle, top grades, plays piano. She’s the one who deserves to be Raymond’s sister.”
“Margaret! I’m talking to you! Is your other ear broken too?” Ruby slammed a book down on Margaret’s desk
-hard.
Everyone knew Margaret was deaf in one ear. They’d mocked her for it more times than they could count.
