"Also, why did you tell them in advance? Once we move in, we could simply bring in authenticators. Then, we can report them to the police and get all of them arrested."

Laurence explained, "Tony is crafty. If he dared to do something like that, he'd make sure the fakes came with certificates and were convincing enough to pass for the real thing. Ordinary authenticators might not be able to tell the difference."

After a pause, he continued, "Even if I didn't say anything, he would've prepared in advance. He wouldn't have replaced the antiques on the first floor. Those are the most valuable pieces. The ones upstairs are mostly small ones and worth less.

"He could also shift the blame onto his children and grandchildren. We don't have a sure way to win a case against him, so we'll just make them spend even more money buying back the genuine pieces. That'll also deal a serious blow to his family.

"When they buy the antiques back, they'll leave a trail for us to follow. Keep a close eye on Tony's family. If you find out they're trying to recover the genuine pieces, catch them in the act. They won't be able to talk their way out of it with solid evidence.

"That way, we can recover the antiques, make Tony's family pay a fortune, and still have evidence to hold them accountable. Just because they bought back the genuine pieces doesn't mean I'll let them go.

"If we don't do it this way, we might know they switched the originals, but we won't find out who the buyers are. Tracking them down ourselves would be a hassle. We can just follow them and let them lead us straight to the pieces."

Laurence went on, "But first, we need to find an authenticator to help us. I'll call Fraser and ask him to come over."

Fraser was a senior of theirs and was a renowned antique expert with an excellent reputation. No one ever questioned the results of an appraisal he conducted.

"I was thinking of contacting Fraser too. I just wonder if he's available."

Laurence responded, "If anyone else asked him, he might not have time. Even if he does, he may not feel like going out and could turn them down. But if I call him, he'll drop whatever he's doing and come over even if he's busy."
