Chapter 3 His Silence Broke My Heart

The applause echoed like shattered glass inside my head.

I stood rooted to the carpet, the velvet rope pressing into my stomach, while the room celebrated my destruction. Tristan and Celeste glided toward the stage. They moved in perfect synchronization. The crowd parted for them, murmuring words of congratulations, raising crystal flutes filled with golden champagne.

Every step he took toward that podium pulled the oxygen from my lungs.

I waited for the punchline. I waited for him to stop, to turn around, to grab the microphone and tell the room that this was a mistake. I clutched the fabric of my dress, my nails digging into my palms until the skin broke. The silver chain around my neck felt heavy, the hidden platinum ring burning against my collarbone like a brand.

We keep it quiet until the end of the fiscal quarter. Then, I will introduce you to the world.

His promises echoed in the empty spaces of my mind.

They reached the steps of the stage. Tristan placed a hand on the small of Celeste’s back, guiding her up. The gesture was casual, practiced, and intimate. It was the exact way he used to guide me through the doors of our hidden apartment.

A photographer at the edge of the stage dropped to one knee, snapping a rapid succession of photos. The flashes washed the couple in stark, blinding light. The illuminated letters behind them loomed like a gravestone over my marriage.

Tristan stepped up to the acrylic podium. He adjusted the microphone. The screech of audio feedback cut through the ballroom, silencing the orchestra and the chatter.

Five hundred of the city’s most powerful people turned their attention to the man who owned my heart.

“Welcome.”

His voice rumbled through the massive speakers. It was a voice that commanded boardrooms, a voice that could tank a stock price with a single syllable. It was not the voice that whispered in my ear in the dark. That man was gone. In his place stood the ruthless CEO of the Johnston Group, a man built of ice and old money.

“The Johnston Group has always prioritized stability,” Tristan began. His gaze swept over the crowd, a king surveying his court. “For four generations, my family has built a foundation on trust, forward momentum, and unbreakable alliances. We do not adapt to the future. We dictate it.”

In the front row, an older woman with iron-gray hair and an imposing posture offered a single, approving nod. Evelyn Johnston. The matriarch. I recognized her sharp features from the financial magazines. She was the gatekeeper of the Johnston legacy, a woman known for destroying anything that threatened her family’s supreme status. She looked at Celeste, and her cold eyes softened into something resembling pride.

My stomach twisted. This was not just a party. This was a coronation.

“To secure our upcoming European expansion, we require a partner who shares our vision and our pedigree,” Tristan continued. The stage lights caught the silver threads in his suit. “Tonight, we celebrate a union that will redefine the market. We celebrate the merging of two great legacies.”

He turned his head. He looked at Celeste.

Chapter 3 1

This was the moment. This was the exact second where Tristan could fix it. He could say the ring was a family heirloom exchanged for a corporate trust. He could say the partnership was strictly business. He could say the word no.
