Married to the Billionaire Who Betrayed Me novel Chapter 4

Chapter 4 Cornered By The Elite Vipers

The air turned into thick, suffocating glass. I clawed at my chest, my fingers brushing against the hidden chain. My legs trembled, threatening to give out.

Silence is a choice. He chose the merger. He chose the stock price. He chose the Whitmore capital. He chose his family’s legacy over the vows we made in that quiet courthouse. I was nothing but a secret that he kept hidden in a penthouse while he paraded his real future in front of the cameras.

On stage, Celeste threw her arms around Tristan’s neck. She pressed her lips to his cheek, a picture-perfect display of devotion for the flashing cameras. Tristan stood rigid, his hands resting lightly on her waist. He accepted the embrace. He accepted his role.

“A brilliant move by Richard Whitmore,” a deep voice murmured to my left.

I turned my head, my vision blurring. Two men stood a few feet away, swirling amber liquid in heavy crystal glasses. I recognized Sebastian Blackwood, a notorious venture capitalist, and Julian Whitmore, Celeste’s older brother.

“Celeste has kept him on a leash since their university days,” Julian sneered, his tone dripping with arrogance. “Tristan fought the arrangement, of course. Tried to prove he could secure the European contracts without our money. But the board cornered him. He needs us. The marriage contract was non-negotiable.”

“And the rumors of a woman in the city?” Sebastian asked, raising an eyebrow. “I heard Tristan was keeping a stray.”

Julian laughed. The sound scraped against my exposed nerves. “A stray is a stray, Sebastian. You do not bring a stray to the dinner table. Tristan knows his duty. He will dispose of whatever distraction he found. He belongs to Celeste now.”

A stray.

A distraction.

The words hit me like physical blows. I stepped back, bumping into a waiter. A silver tray wobbled, and a champagne flute tipped, spilling pale wine across my shoes. The waiter muttered an apology, but I didn’t hear him. The noise of the ballroom morphed into a horrific, distorted carnival of laughter and clinking glass.

I had to get out. I had to run before the tears fell, before the panic attack shattered my chest completely.

But my feet moved in the opposite direction.

I pushed away from the velvet rope. I walked toward the stage.

I did not have a plan. I did not care about the stares of the tech founders or the whispers of the banking heiresses as I shoved past them. I needed to see him up close. I needed to look at the man I married and see the betrayal on his skin. I needed him to tell me to my face that I was discarded.

Tristan and Celeste descended the stairs, immediately swarmed by a tight circle of executives and their wives. Celeste was radiant, holding her left hand up to accept the fawning compliments over the diamond.

I reached the edge of the circle. I stood behind a towering real estate magnate, my breathing shallow, my hands shaking uncontrollably.

“It is an exquisite piece, Celeste,” a woman cooed.

“Tristan has such wonderful taste,” Celeste beamed, leaning her head against his shoulder. “He knows exactly what I deserve.”

Tristan stared blankly at the crowd. He looked exhausted, the skin around his eyes tight and strained. He nodded at the compliments, offering hollow, single-word answers.

I stepped out from behind the magnate. I stepped directly into the clearing.

Tell them, I begged him with my eyes. Tell them who I am.
