Married Your Girl Bestie as a Dare? Congrats You're Stuck with her now novel Chapter 8

Chapter 8

Three months later.

The service process optimization proposal I submitted for the marriage registration office was adopted by

the city bureau and rolled out state-wide.

Because of that, I was promoted to Deputy Director of the registry..

On the day the appointment came through, Mr. Reynolds clapped me on the shoulder, beaming. “Chloe, I

knew you had it in you. Young and capable.”

My coworkers immediately started chanting for me to treat them. I laughed and agreed, booking a nice

restaurant near the office.

Midway through the celebration dinner, while everyone was chatting happily, my phone rang. It was Emily.

“Chloe! Huge news!” Her voice was so excited it nearly cracked. “Harper Lane is pregnant!”

I froze for a second, then asked calmly, “Mason Carter’s?”

“Who else could it be?” Emily rattled off. “They say she’s already two months along. Both families are in chaos right now. Harper’s side wants Mason to take responsibility and hold a wedding immediately. Mason’s family thinks Harper planned this and is trying to trap him with a baby…”

I stepped out into the hallway outside the private room and leaned against the wall. “And then?”

“And then it gets better,” Emily lowered her voice. “Apparently Mason doesn’t want the baby, but Harper threatened suicide. They’re fighting nonstop now. Mason already moved back in with his parents!”

I stared out at the city lights beyond the window. Neon flickered. Traffic flowed endlessly below.

“Chloe? Are you listening?”

“I am.”

“And you don’t have anything to say?”

I thought for a moment. “The child is innocent.”

Emily fell silent for a few seconds on the other end. “You really are… too kind.”

“It’s not kindness,” I corrected her. “It’s just stating a fact. No matter how much resentment exists between adults, a child shouldn’t be dragged into it.”

After hanging up, I stood in the hallway for a long time.

Mason and Harper’s child. A future I once believed I would have with Mason was now being realized by him

and someone else.

Strangely, there was no pain in my heart. Only a vast, quiet calm.

When I returned to the private room, my coworkers were playing Truth or Dare. Jessica spotted me and lit up. “Deputy Director Sullivan! Come on, your turn! Truth or dare?”

I smiled and took a seat. “Truth.”

“Alright!” Jessica’s eyes darted mischievously. “Do you have someone you like right now?”

The room fell instantly silent. Everyone looked at me with curiosity.

I lifted my glass and gave it a gentle swirl. The amber liquid caught the light and shimmered softly.

“I do,” I said with a smile. “I like who I am right now.”

After a brief pause, the room erupted in applause and whistles.

“That’s powerful!”

“Deputy Director Sullivan, you’re amazing!”

“A toast to independent women!”

That night, I drank just enough to feel lightheaded. One by one, my coworkers offered congratulations, praising my career progress and bright future.

Yes. A bright future. And this time, my future no longer needed anyone else to define it.
