Chapter 9

The day before the six-month cooling-off period expired, Mason called me. This time, I didn’t decline.

“Chloe… tomorrow,” his voice sounded exhausted, worn thin. “Harper and I are going to file for divorce.”

“Mm. Congratulations,” I replied, cool and professional.

There was a long silence on the other end. So long that I almost thought he’d hung up.

“Chloe, I…” He took a deep breath. “I’ve thought about a lot these past few months. I was wrong. Completely

wrong. I never should’ve hurt you that way, never should’ve treated what we had like a joke, and I never

should’ve let things get this far with Harper…”

“Mason,” I interrupted calmly, “those words should be said to Harper. She’s your legal wife now, and she’s

carrying your child.”

“The baby…” He gave a bitter laugh. “If I said I was drunk that night and don’t remember anything, would you

believe me?”

“Whether I believe you isn’t important,” I said evenly. “What matters is that it’s your responsibility.”

“And if…” His voice suddenly grew urgent. “If I take care of everything, divorce Harper, pay child support properly… do we still have a chance?”

I stood on my balcony, looking down at the park below where children were laughing and running around.

The setting sun painted the sky in soft shades of orange and pink. A light breeze passed through, carrying

the faint scent of gardenias.

“Mason,” I said quietly, “do you remember what you said when we first got together?”

“What?”

“You said you’d protect me forever. That you’d never let me be wronged.” I smiled faintly. “But in the end, the person who hurt me the most was you.”

“…”

“Chloe, do you really not want to see me at all?”

“It’s not that I don’t want to,” I answered honestly. “There’s just no need anymore.”

Before hanging up, I added one last thing. “By the way, no matter what you and Harper decide in the end, I hope you make the best possible choice for the child.”

This time, I was the one who ended the call.

The next day, I took annual leave.

Not to hide. Not to avoid anything. I simply felt that my life deserved more important things.

I went to the botanical garden outside the city and saw the cherry blossoms in full bloom. Pale pink petals

drifted through the air, so beautiful they felt unreal.

My phone was on silent, but I could picture the scene at there.

Mason and Harper would probably argue. They’d blame each other, sign the divorce papers, then turn and

walk toward separate lives.

And my world had long since stopped intersecting with theirs.

Later, Jessica told me that Mason and Harper had completed the divorce.

I replied, [Thanks for your hard work. I’ll bring you cake tomorrow.]

Then I turned my phone off and went back to admiring the view.

Spring had truly arrived.
