Chapter 11: Kindergarten
(Aurora’s POV)
Back at my temporary apartment, I opened my laptop and typed “Everett Global” into the search bar. The screen filled with information about the massive conglomerate. It was a Fortune 500 titan, a business empire that Ivy League graduates would kill to get into.
I stared at the logo, my eyes narrowing.

I remembered how Jasper used to talk about the main Everett family. He spoke with a mix of longing and unearned pride, as if sharing a surname with Phineas Everett somehow transferred the man’s brilliance to him by osmosis.
In our marriage, Jasper used his arrogance like a shield to hide his mediocrity. He tried to make me believe I was the one reaching up, that I was lucky to be associated with him. He fed on my self–doubt.
But that doubt was gone now.
I wasn’t the submissive wife seeking a crumb of validation anymore. I was a challenger ready to take back my life.
“Jasper always acted like the Everett name was a trophy he earned, not a lottery ticket he won at birth,” I thought, a cold smile touching my lips. “Let’s see if he can recognize actual talent without his vanity getting in the way.”
I didn’t hesitate. I attached my CV and hit the “Enter” key.

The application was sent. It wasn’t just a job inquiry. It was a declaration of war.
My phone buzzed on the desk, breaking the silence. The caller ID flashed: *Ms. Lane – Kindergarten*.
I picked it up. “Hello, Ms. Lane.”
“Mrs. Everett,” the teacher’s voice was frantic. “Do you have time to come to the school immediately? We have a situation with Rosalind.”
My instinct was to grab my keys and run. But then, the memory of Rosalind’s voice stopped me cold.
*I hate you. I don’t want you to be my mommy.*

My grip on the phone tightened until my knuckles turned white. Then, I forced my hand to relax.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Lane,” I said, my voice calm and detached. “I’m at work. I can’t leave.”

“But Mrs. Everett,” Ms. Lane pleaded. “These are the formative years. It is crucial that a parent is present when-”
“What did she do?” I cut her off.
Ms. Lane sighed heavily. “Rosalind has started a clique in her class. She publicly mocked another student for wearing… well, ‘cheap, out–of–season clothes.‘ She encouraged the other children to isolate the girl. It’s classic ‘Mean Girl‘ behavior, and the other parents are furious.”
I pulled the phone away from my ear and opened the “St. Jude’s Parents” iMessage group chat.
It was blowing up.
Dozens of notifications cascaded down the screen. Angry mothers were tagging me, demanding an explanation. They called out the lack of discipline in the Everett household. They accused my daughter of being a bully.
I read the insults. They stung, but not in the way they used to.
I tapped the info icon. I scrolled to the bottom.
*Leave Conversation.*
I confirmed the action. The noise vanished.
I put the phone back to my ear. “Ms. Lane, I apologize for the trouble she’s causing you. But this isn’t a secret anymore: I am in the process of suing for divorce.”
There was a stunned silence on the other end.
“From now on,” I continued, my voice steady, “for all disciplinary issues regarding Rosalind, please contact her father directly.”
I texted Jasper’s private number to her.
“Good luck, Ms. Lane.”
I hung up and set the phone down. A weight lifted off my chest. Jasper always claimed raising a child was simple. He always told me I was overreacting.
Fine. Let him see just how “simple” it really is.

Chapter 11: Kindergarten
(Author’s POV)
In the CEO’s office at Aether Life Sciences, Jasper had just finished signing a stack of documents when his phone exploded with noise.
Ping. Ping. Ping.
Claim
He frowned and picked it up. He opened the backup logs for the parent group chat. His eyes widened.
The messages were brutal. Prominent socialites were putting the Everett name on blast. They were demanding an apology. They were questioning the family’s values.
“Dammit,” Jasper hissed, rubbing his temples. A migraine began to throb behind his eyes.
He tried to call Aurora. Straight to voicemail.
He cursed under his breath and dialed his mother, Victoria.
“Mother,” he said urgently. “I need you to go to Rosalind’s school. There’s been an incident.”
“The school?” Victoria’s voice was lazy. “I’m at the spa, darling. I have a facial in five minutes. Besides, I’m not going down there to be yelled at by those dreadful women. Handle it yourself.”
She hung up.
Jasper stared at the phone in disbelief. He couldn’t leave the office; the board meeting was in twenty minutes.
He scrolled through his contacts and landed on Sienna.
“Sienna,” he said, his voice softening. “Can you do me a huge favor? Rosalind is in trouble at school. I need someone to go check on her.”
“Of course, Jasper,” Sienna answered instantly, her tone sweet. “I’ll go right now. Poor little angel.”
Sienna hung up, a triumphant smile spreading across her face. This was it. Her chance to play the grieving, devoted mother figure. She ignored the throbbing pain in her bandaged arm.
She went to her closet and pulled out a limited–edition Chanel suit. She applied her makeup flawlessly. She looked every inch the wealthy matriarch.
At the kindergarten, the reception room was a war zone.
Three angry mothers stood around Ms. Lane’s desk, their arms crossed, their faces red.
Chapter 11–Kindergarten
“We pay fifty thousand a year for this school!” one woman shouted. “I don’t expect my daughter to be shamed for her wardrobe!”
“We need a response from the Everett family immediately,” another snapped. “Or we go to the board.”
Ms. Lane looked ready to cry. She had been trying to reach Jasper for thirty minutes. She thought of Aurora’s cold refusal. She couldn’t blame the woman. Being the default parent to an absentee father like Jasper must have been hell.
Suddenly, the door swung open.
Sienna Rathbone swept into the room, a cloud of expensive perfume trailing behind her. The diamonds around her neck caught the light.
“Hello, everyone,” she said, flashing a practiced socialite smile. “I’m Sienna. I’m Jasper’s girlfriend… and Rosalind’s future stepmother.”
