Chapter 92: She Hasn’t Said Yes Yet
(Author’s POV)
Aurora had been back in her room for less than ten minutes when the front door opened.
Phineas turned, half-expecting her to have changed her mind.
It wasn’t Aurora.
Eleanor Everett stepped into the entryway, removing her coat with the unhurried efficiency of a woman who had never needed to knock. She was in a slate-grey wrap dress, her silver hair perfectly set, and her eyes moved through the apartment the moment she crossed the threshold.
They landed on the coffee table first. Two champagne flutes, both used, set side by side.
Then they dropped to the shoe rack by the door, where a pair of pink suede slippers sat neatly on the lower shelf.
Eleanor’s expression did not change, but something behind her eyes sharpened considerably.
“Phineas,” she said pleasantly. “Is there someone here?”
“Look around if you like.” He picked up Aurora’s glass from the coffee table and took a slow sip. It was sweeter than his.
Eleanor did not look around frantically. She never did. She simply walked through the room at her own pace, cataloguing as she went.
Two glasses. The pink slippers. A glass vase on the side table holding three white roses, fresh enough that the petals hadn’t begun to curl. She paused at the entrance to the walk-in closet and looked at the shelf where a folded tie sat in a neat square – pale blue, clearly not Phineas’s usual palette.
She came back to the living room and sat down on the sofa.
“When are you bringing her to meet us properly?”
Phineas set the glass down.
“Your father and I stopped caring about family names and social circles years ago,” Eleanor continued. “If she’s a decent person with nothing to hide, I have no objection. None at all.” She folded her hands in her lap. “So. When?”
Phineas looked at her for a moment.

“I can’t bring her yet, Mom,” he said. His tone was completely unbothered. “She hasn’t said
yes.”
Eleanor stared at him.
The silence stretched out for several seconds.
“She hasn’t-” Eleanor stopped. “You proposed and she said no?”
“She hasn’t said yes yet,” he corrected. “There’s a difference.”
Eleanor continued to stare at her son, who looked entirely at peace with this situation, and found herself, for perhaps the first time in recent memory, with absolutely nothing to say.
(Author’s POV)
Jasper let himself into the house just after ten.
The housekeeper met him in the hallway and told him Rosalind had gone to sleep around eight. He nodded, handed over his coat, and went upstairs.
He stood in the doorway of his daughter’s room for a moment. She was curled on her side, one arm wrapped around a stuffed rabbit, her dark hair fanned across the pillow. He sat down carefully on the edge of the bed.
She stirred at the dip in the mattress.
“Daddy?”
“It’s me. Go back to sleep.”
Rosalind pushed herself upright and rubbed her eyes. “Where were you?”
“Grandma got sick. I was at the hospital with her.” He smoothed her hair back from her forehead. “She’s going to be fine. She’ll probably be home next week.”
“Can I go see her?”
“Not yet. Hospitals are full of germs. You can see her when she’s home.”
Rosalind accepted this and leaned against his arm. He sat with her in the dim room, listening to the quiet.
Then he said it.
“Rosalind. If your mom and I officially separated – if it was final – would you want to stay with

me?”
He had braced himself for tears. He had prepared a response to tears.
What he had not prepared for was the way her face lit up.

She bounced on the mattress, grabbing his arm with both hands, her voice jumping up half
an octave.
“Are you getting divorced? Are you actually getting divorced?”
Jasper went very still.
“Why are you happy about that?”
“Because then you can marry Sienna!” She was practically vibrating. “I’ve wanted that forever, Daddy. I want Sienna to be my real mom. I want it more than anything.” She beamed up at him. “And I don’t miss my other mom at all. Not even a little bit.”
Jasper reached out and touched her cheek.
