Chapter 243: She Looks Just Like Me
(Aurora’s POV)
“You’re my wife.” His voice was even, but the weight behind it was absolute. “I’m not going to let someone hurt you and do nothing. And I’m not going to let you carry the guilt for something I chose to do.”
I leaned against his shoulder. The anxiety didn’t disappear entirely, but it loosened. Enough to breathe around.
He was quiet for a moment, then said, “Dinner tomorrow. Just the two of us. Somewhere that isn’t the estate or the office.”
I winced slightly.
He noticed immediately. “What?”
“I already told Olivia I’d go with her to the bridal boutique tomorrow evening. She’s trying on wedding dresses and Gavin is out of town, and she didn’t want to go alone.”
Phineas looked at me with the expression of a man whose plans had just been reorganized by someone
else’s wedding dress appointment.
He picked up his phone without a word and opened the group chat.
I watched him type: *Gavin. A word of advice from someone who’s paying attention. A lawyer who can’t find time to go with his wife to try on wedding dresses is a lawyer who’s going to come home one day and find the house empty. Something to consider.*
Within thirty seconds, the group chat erupted. Patrick sent a laughing emoji. Arthur responded with an unhelpful observation about priorities. Someone else added fuel I didn’t bother reading.
I shook my head. “You’re terrible.”
“I’m accurate.”
(Author’s POV)
Liam was sitting in his apartment when the notification came through. He glanced at the screen, saw it was the group chat, and didn’t open it. The corner of his mouth moved – barely, just a fraction – and then settled back into nothing.
His mother came in from the kitchen, drying her hands on a dish towel. “Don’t forget tomorrow,” she said. “Fiona wants to leave by noon. The boutique appointment is at one.”

His mother nodded and went back to the kitchen. Liam set his phone face-down on the table.
And for no reason he could name, in the quiet of the room, Olivia’s face surfaced in his mind. Not a
memory of anything specific. Just her face. The way she used to laugh too loudly at things that weren’t that funny, and not care at all who heard.
He sat with it for a moment.
Then he got up and went to find Fiona.
(Aurora’s POV)
Tiffany looked up when I pushed open the door to the boutique, and for a moment, she just stared.
I smiled. “My friend saw your window display a few weeks ago and fell in love with one of the designs. She wanted to ask about a custom order.”
Olivia stepped in behind me, already scanning the showroom with wide eyes.
Tiffany recovered quickly, but I could see the guilt working through her expression. “Aurora, -” She
stopped. “I didn’t expect you to come here. Not after everything.”
“It’s a beautiful shop,” I said simply. “And she needed someone good.”
Tiffany pressed her lips together and nodded. “I owe you an apology. A real one. I know that.”
“You don’t have to-”
“I do.” She said it quietly, firmly. “I’m sorry.”
The door opened again before I could respond. A woman walked in – stylish, confident, with the kind of easy familiarity that told me she’d been here before.
Tiffany’s face lit up. “Chloe.”
“I was in the neighborhood.” Chloe glanced at me and Olivia, then back at Tiffany. “Sorry, am I
interrupting?”
“Not at all.” Tiffany gestured between us. “Aurora, this is Chloe Langford. Chloe, this is-
“I’ll take Olivia for measurements,” I said, turning to Tiffany. “Give you two a minute.”
Tiffany nodded gratefully and led Olivia toward the back. I settled onto the sofa near the window to wait.
Chloe sat down across from me.
She was staring. Not rudely – more like she was trying to work something out, and her face hadn’t quite caught up with her manners.
I looked at her directly. “Is there something on my face?”
She blinked. “No. God, I’m sorry. That was rude.” She shook her head. “It’s just – you look exactly like my aunt.”
