Chapter 34: The Reunion1

(Author’s POV)

Professor Lewis stood in the bustling faculty cafeteria, his sharp eyes scanning the crowd until they landed on a familiar target. Zack was waiting in line, clutching a brown paper bag containing a fresh turkey sandwich and a steaming cup of black coffee. He looked ready to

bolt.

Lewis intercepted him with a raised eyebrow. Is that for your notoriously picky mentor?

Zack offered a polite, weary smile. Yes, Professor Lewis. Professor Walsh doesn’t have much of an appetite today. He just wanted something light.

Lewis snorted, a sound of arrogant amusement. No appetite? It is probably because he saw the breakthrough my team made this morning while his own research is stalling. He is likely eating his heart out, not lunch.

He reached out. Give those to me. I will go comforthim.

Zack tightened his grip on the bag, hesitating. I really think Professor Walsh might be in a better mood if he sees me, sir.

Lewis didn’t give him a choice. He deftly plucked the takeout bag and the coffee from Zack’s hands. Nonsense. Consider this my treat to him.

Before Zack could protest further, Lewis turned on his heel and strode out of the cafeteria with confident, sweeping steps. Zack stood frozen, watching him go. He rubbed his forehead, genuinely worried about whether Professor Walsh would be able to digest his lunch at all with his nemesis delivering it.

Professor Walsh was leaning back in his leather office chair, eyes closed, savoring a rare

moment of silence.

The door flew open with a rude bang.

Lewis marched in, dropping the bag of food onto the mahogany desk with a heavy thud. Walsh snapped his eyes open. Seeing his old rival, his brow furrowed instantly. He was certain Lewis was here to gloat about that new patent the pharmaceutical companies were fighting over like rabid dogs.

But Lewis didn’t launch into a speech about his genius. Instead, he took a seat opposite the desk, looking strangely casual.

Henry,Lewis said, drumming his fingers on the armrest. Are you free to come to the university this Saturday?

Walsh rolled his eyes, reaching for the coffee. No time. I promised to take my grandson to his baseball game this weekend.

Lewis leaned forward, his expression unreadable. Are you sure? You might regret it.”

I am sure,Walsh grunted, opening the sandwich wrapper. Nothing is more important than family time. Now, if you aren’t going to talk science, get out.”

Lewis stood up, a sly, meaningful smile curling his lips. Fine. Just don’t blame me later for not warning you.

He turned and sauntered out, whistling a low tune. Walsh watched the door close, a sudden, inexplicable unease settling in his gut. He frowned, staring at the turkey sandwich, but quickly dismissed the feeling. Lewis was just playing mind games.

(Aurora’s POV)

Saturday arrived with clear blue skies. I decided to shed the armor I had worn for the past few weeks. I left the tailored suits in the closet and put on a crisp white shirt and a pair of fitted jeans. I let my hair fall loose over my shoulders.

Walking through the campus, I caught my reflection in a glass window. I didn’t look like a divorcee battling a corporate giant. I looked like a student again.

Passing the central plaza fountain, the spray of water misting in the air, I felt a profound shift. I wasn’t lost. For years, I had walked in a fog, suffocated by the expectations of the Everett family. But looking at the red brick of the medical research building, I felt a surge of

control.

It was like waking up from a long coma.

I was no longer the housewife who swallowed insults for the sake of a cold marriage. I was a queen returning to reclaim her throne.

Professor Lewis was waiting at the entrance. I walked up to him, my steps light. I scanned the area instinctively.

Lewis shrugged, reading my mind. “Henry isn’t coming. He prioritized a little league game over my invitation.

I let out a clear, knowing laugh. Let me guess. Is he sulking because he lost that bet to you last month? Or is he just trying to avoid your gloating?
