Chapter 34: The Reunion–2

“I was naive,” I said, my voice steady. “I thought it was love. It turned out I was just a cheap substitute for another woman in Jasper’s heart.”
Lewis frowned. “And the child? Your daughter?”
“Rosalind stays with them,” I said. The words tasted like ash, but I forced them out. “I won’t fight for custody right now.”
Lewis looked surprised. “Why?”
“Because she has been thoroughly brainwashed by Jasper and Sienna,” I explained, my tone turning cold and rational. “She hates me. She sees me as the enemy. And right now, I don’t have the power or the money to fight the Everett legal team.”
I set the coffee cup down. “I can’t save someone who doesn’t want to be saved, not even my own daughter. Not yet. When I have enough power to truly ‘fix‘ her, I will take her back. But right now, I choose to love myself first.”
Lewis nodded slowly, approval dawning in his eyes. “Good. You have your priorities straight.”
He leaned back. “A few days ago, Aether Life Sciences sent a team to contact me. They want to buy the exclusive rights to my new gene patent. They are offering an astronomical sum.”
He looked at me. “I was considering it. It’s good business. But knowing how that man treated
you…”

I pulled out my phone and opened a file. It was the transcript from the recent court hearing. I slid it across the desk.
“You should know,” I said, “Jasper isn’t just a bad husband. He’s a thief. He admitted in court that he used my research data to prop up his company’s stock price three years ago.”
Lewis read the document. His face turned a violent shade of red. He slammed his hand onto the desk, making the coffee cups rattle.
“He stole a student’s work?” Lewis roared. “That unethical, spineless…”
He tossed the phone back to me. “That settles it. I don’t care how much money they offer. I will let this patent rot in the archives before I let Jasper Everett touch it.”
I laughed softly. “Thank you, Professor.”

Lewis blinked, his anger fading into a mischievous grin. “To be honest, I didn’t tell Henry you were coming today on purpose. I wanted to punish the stubborn old fool. When he finds out he missed you, he is going to have a stroke.”
(Walsh’s POV)
“Lewis, you old bastard, what exactly are you plotting?”
The booming voice echoed from the doorway, startling us both.
I stood there, chest heaving slightly from the walk. I had tried to enjoy the morning, but Lewis’s cryptic smile had haunted me all night. We had been rivals for forty years; I knew when he was setting a trap. I had made the driver turn the car around halfway to the baseball field.
