The phone on Gavin Sterling’s desk buzzed incessantly until he finally picked it up, putting it

on speaker.

“Did you see the Story on i********?” Dr. Patrick Sloan’s voice crackled through the line, dripping with barely concealed gossip.

Gavin didn’t look up from the stack of legal documents in front of him. He rubbed the bridge of his nose, sighing. “I saw it.”

“That wasn’t just a tie, Gavin,” Patrick analyzed with the confidence of a man who had watched too many detective shows. “That was a statement. A man like Phineas Everett–cold, abstinent, married to his work–does not post a picture of a tie on rumpled bedsheets unless a woman put it there.”

“Maybe he just liked the color,” Gavin deadpanned, though he didn’t believe it himself.

“Please. It’s a mating call,” Patrick insisted. “Who is she? My money is on the new wife. It has

to be Aurora.”

Gavin paused, his pen hovering over a signature line. “Aurora only filed for divorce a month ago. Even Phineas wouldn’t be that reckless publicly. The ink isn’t even dry on the restraining

order draft.”

“I don’t know,” Patrick mused. “Remember the hospital? The way he looked at her wasn’t exactly uncle–nephiew behavior. If you pay my consultation fee, I’ll drive over there and investigate right now.”

“I have work to do. Goodbye, Patrick.” Gavin cut the call.

Across town, Serena Everett stared at her phone screen, equally baffled. She zoomed in on the photo. It wasn’t a limited edition. It wasn’t even bespoke. Why would the head of the family, the man who owned half the city, show off such a common gift? She frowned, concluding that her uncle must have some eccentric, poor friend he was pitying.

Hours later, the peace of Aurora’s apartment complex was shattered by a heavy fist pounding on her door.

Aurora had just stepped out of the shower, a hydrating sheet mask clinging to her face. She tightened her robe and marched to the door but didn’t unlock it.

“Jasper,” she shouted through the wood, her voice hard. “If you knock one more time, I’m calling the police. I have the application for the restraining order right here. Do not test me.”

“Open the damn door, Aurora!” Jasper’s voice was slurred, thick with alcohol and entitlement. *Bang! Bang!*

Aurora’s patience snapped. She ripped the mask off her face, tossing it into the trash. She unlocked her phone, pulled up the emergency dialer, and threw the door open.

The smell of stale whiskey hit her immediately. Jasper stood there, swaying slightly, his eyes bloodshot and unfocused.

Aurora held the phone screen inches from his face. “I’m giving you ten seconds to get out of my sight before I have you arrested for harassment. Try me.”

Jasper blinked, taken aback by the fierce aggression in her hazel eyes. He reached out, his hand clumsy as he tried to grab her wrist. “Stop it,” he growled. “Until the judge signs those papers, you are still my wife. Stop acting like you don’t want this.”

Aurora sidestepped him effortlessly. “I have formally sued you, Mr. Everett. Wait for the subpoena. We are done.”

The word “done” seemed to snap something inside Jasper’s intoxicated mind. The alcohol. fueled a dark, possessive rage. He lunged forward, slamming his hands against the wall on either side of her head, trapping her in the narrow entryway.

He leaned in, his face inches from hers. “Leave me? And go where?” he sneered, his gaze dropping to her stomach. “You’re pregnant with my child. You have a dying brother who bleeds money. Who else is going to want a woman with that much baggage?”

Aurora didn’t flinch. She looked him dead in the eye and laughed coldly.

“I’m taking half your assets and a significant chunk of your Aether shares,” she said, her voice steady. “That money will pay for the best specialists in the world for Leo. And with a fortune like that? I can find any number of young, handsome men who will line up to date me.”

The insult to his ego was too much. Jasper grabbed her jaw, forcing her head up, and smashed his lips against hers in a punishing, possessive kiss.

Revulsion exploded in Aurora’s chest. She didn’t hesitate. She lifted her foot and stomped her heel down onto the arch of Jasper’s expensive leather shoe with all her strength.
