Jasper leaned against the wall, favoring his injured foot, watching her frantically clean herself. The sight sent a chill through his drunken haze. She wasn’t playing hard to get. She was disgusted by him.
He cleared his throat, trying to regain some dignity. “Look… about the past. I was wrong.”
Aurora ignored him, still splashing water on her face.
“If you come back,” Jasper continued, his voice taking on a bargaining tone, “I’ll have finance double your allowance. No, I’ll double your old salary. You can come back to Aether Life Sciences. I’ll give you the entire R&D department to manage. Stop being stubborn. You need this job.”
Aurora finally turned off the tap. She looked at her reflection, water dripping from her chin, and let out a sharp, incredulous laugh.
She turned to face him. “Jasper, your arrogance is truly blinding.”
She took a step closer. “You think I’m still the housewife begging for a lab assistant position?
I was headhunted weeks ago. I work for Everett Global now. While you play CEO in your little subsidiary, I’m reporting directly to the core research division.”
She saw the shock widen his eyes.
“So keep your charity,” she said, enunciating every word. “I’m already out of your league.”

Before Jasper could process the information, Aurora grabbed the lapels of his suit jacket. Using his shock to her advantage, she shoved him backward.
He stumbled, his coordination shot by the whiskey, and she marched him backward right out
the front door.
As he crossed the threshold, Aurora spotted a security guard patrolling down the hall.
“Excuse me!” she shouted, pointing an accusing finger at Jasper. “This man is trespassing!”
The guard’s head snapped up, and he started jogging toward them.
“Remove him immediately,” Aurora commanded, her voice ringing with authority, “or I will sue this building for negligence!”

Jasper looked around. Neighbors were peeking out. The guard was closing in. He realized with a sinking feeling that he had no power here. Aurora had stripped him of his control.
Not wanting to be dragged out like a common criminal, Jasper straightened his jacket, shot her a look of pure venom, and turned to leave before the guard could touch him.
Aurora watched his retreating back and slammed the door with a satisfying, deafening
*thud*.

Across the city, the atmosphere was far more refined, though no less manipulative.
Sienna Rathbone sat in the corner of a glittering charity ballroom. Her attempt to replace Aurora had hit a wall with Jasper’s recent erratic behavior, so she had pivoted. She needed a new ally.
She had learned that Matriarch Eleanor Everett, the most powerful woman in the family, suffered from chronic insomnia and favored natural medicine.
Sienna had coached Victoria, Jasper’s mother, on exactly what to say.
