Chapter 41: Moving Day
(Author’s POV)
Matriarch Eleanor’s insomnia had a very simple root cause: her son, Phineas.
Claym
At thirty–three, the supreme head of the Everett Global Group was still unmarried. Years ago, her husband, William, had tried to trick Phineas into a comprehensive physical, hoping to find a physiological reason–or perhaps a preference for men–that explained his bachelorhood.
Phineas hadn’t played along. instead, he had coldly tossed a medical file onto his father’s mahogany desk. It was a post–operative report for a vasectomy.
“I have sterilized myself to focus entirely on the empire,” he had declared without blinking. “No distractions.”
William had nearly suffered a heart attack on the spot. Now, with even his niece Serena reaching marriageable age, Phineas remained alone, heirless, and unbothered. It was enough to keep any mother awake at night.
Victoria Everett knew none of this. Guided by Serena, she smoothed her designer skirt and approached the resting Matriarch with practiced elegance.
Serena smiled sweetly. “Grandma, this is Aunt Victoria. She’s been worried about your health.”
Serena explained that Eleanor was suffering from light, fragmented sleep. Victoria didn’t offer a clinical diagnosis. Instead, she observed Eleanor’s complexion with the empathy of a high–end therapist.
“You have a strong constitution, Mother,” Victoria said softly. “This isn’t a physical ailment. It’s the weight of the family pressing on your mind.”
Eleanor, usually dismissive of social climbers, paused. Victoria had struck a chord.
“The heart needs medicine for the heart,” Victoria continued smoothly. “I can recommend a specialist in homeopathy from Europe. A specific blend of herbal calming teas. It works wonders for stress.”
It was the perfect pitch–neither intrusive nor medical, but sophisticated. Eleanor’s face relaxed into a rare, genuine smile.
“That sounds lovely, Victoria,” Eleanor said. “You may leave the details with the butler.”
Later, inside the plush interior of a town car, Victoria couldn’t hide her excitement. Sienna

squeezed her mother–in–law’s hand tight.
“We’re in,” Sienna whispered, her eyes gleaming. “Once we have the Matriarch, the family doors will open again.”
(Aurora’s POV)
The next morning, I made the final decision to move.

Olivia’s apartment was in a high–end complex, but Jasper had already breached the perimeter once. When I called a few luxury real estate agents, their hesitation chilled me. They practically admitted that for a man like Jasper Everett, standard security systems were just paper decorations.
“Damn the rich,” I muttered, standing on the curb. “And damn their privilege.”
The wind bit through my coat. Jasper had turned the city’s safety into a joke. If the law couldn’t block him, maybe I needed a monster he was actually afraid of.
A sleek black Bentley Mulsanne glided to a silent stop in front of me. The tinted window rolled down, revealing Phineas’s cold, sculpted profile.
“I heard you’re house hunting,” he said, tapping his fingers on the leather steering wheel. “As thanks for the tie, I have a vacant apartment. I can rent it to you at half the market rate.”
I raised an eyebrow, skepticism radiating off me. “Mr. Everett, that tie cost three hundred dollars. Even with a family discount, the math doesn’t work. What’s your angle? Do you a live–in maid? Is this a tax write–off?”
“I value privacy,” Phineas replied, his voice flat. “I prefer a tenant who knows how to be invisible over a noisy stranger.”

I bit my lip, weighing the options. It sounded suspicious. But compared to Jasper, who was a confirmed lunatic, Phineas was just an unknown variable. And I knew for a fact Jasper was terrified of his uncle.
“Fine,” I tilted my chin up. “But I pay all my own utilities.”
The car ride was silent until we pulled into the underground garage of the Everett Zenith. My stomach dropped. This wasn’t an apartment building; it was a private fortress in the city
center.
Phineas led me into a dedicated elevator. “I own the building. I live in the Penthouse. Security and staff are on the lower levels. You can take the floor below mine.”
The elevator doors opened into a sprawling, empty luxury suite. It was massive.

“How much?” I asked, dreading the answer.
“One thousand a month,” Phineas said casually.

I let out a sharp, disbelief–filled laugh. “One thousand? Is the heating broken? Is there a poltergeist in the closet? If not, this is charity. I’m broke, Mr. Everett, but I’m not a beggar.”
