Chapter 52: Get Them Out–1
Chapter 52: Get Them Out
(Author’s POV)
Eleanor leaned toward Phineas, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Are these people descendants of that illegitimate branch?”
Phineas gave a single, quiet nod.
Eleanor’s expression tightened. She looked genuinely puzzled. “But Serena was the one who brought them in.”
Across the room, Serena had already gone pale. Her mouth opened before her brain caught up.
“I didn’t know they were going to-”
One look from Arthur stopped her cold. The sentence died in her throat. She shut her mouth and looked away, her face burning.
*Sienna, you absolute disaster of a human being. I am never answering your calls again.*
The standoff held for a suspended moment – and then the banquet hall doors burst open.
Jasper’s household butler stumbled in, red–faced and breathless. He had clearly argued his way past the security at the entrance and looked like a man who had sprinted the last hundred meters. He pushed through the edge of the crowd, spotted Jasper, and made a
beeline for him.
He had been calling for the past twenty minutes. No one had picked up. The document in his hand was a formal court filing – he hadn’t dared delay it a second longer.
He reached Jasper and thrust the envelope forward.
“Mr. Everett. This arrived from the court this afternoon. Official legal documents. I came as
soon as I could.”
Jasper stared at him.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” His voice dropped to a hiss. “You barged into a private event to hand me paperwork? Whatever it is, it can wait until we’re home.”
The butler flinched but didn’t retreat. “Sir, it’s a court summons. I didn’t think I should-”

“Lower your voice.”

But the hall had gone quiet in the way that large rooms go quiet when everyone is pretending not to listen. The butler’s stage–whisper carried perfectly to the nearest twenty guests.
“It’s a summons, sir. Filed by Mrs. Aurora Caldwell. Regarding the divorce proceedings.”
For a half–second, nobody moved.
Then the room exhaled – a collective, barely–concealed murmur that rippled outward through the crowd. Guests leaned toward one another behind their champagne flutes. Eyes moved from the butler to Jasper to Sienna and back again.
Phineas looked at the butler. His expression was entirely pleasant.
“Well done,” he said, loud enough for the nearest cluster of guests to hear. “That is exactly what a loyal member of staff should do. Prompt, diligent, unafraid to do his job properly.” He paused. “Someone give this man a raise.”
A few guests near him covered their smiles.
Jasper’s face turned ashen. Victoria felt as though she might faint. She knew Aurora was getting a divorce, but she hadn’t expected it to be revealed in such a setting. She could feel the stares around her. She could feel the reputation she’d painstakingly built over the years crumbling away.
“That’s enough,” She grabbed the butler’s arm, screaming. “Not another word.”
Phineas turned to the room at large. His voice remained conversational, almost idle.
“I suppose it makes a certain kind of sense. A man brings his mistress to a formal occasion. His wife files for divorce.” He tilted his head slightly. “The child’s behavior tonight was unfortunate, but what else do you expect? When the adults in the household have no concept of basic decency-”
The word *mistress* hit William Everett like a physical blow.
His face went iron–grey. His deeply buried memories suddenly surged to the surface with violent intensity. He recalled that woman who had taken everything from his mother–her dignity, her health, and ultimately her life. That shame had never truly faded from his heart.
He straightened his spine.
“Enough.”
He turned to the nearest hotel security officer and pointed at Jasper’s group with the handle

of his walking stick.
“Get them out. All of them. Now.”

Security personnel immediately stepped forward. “Gentlemen and ladies, please follow us.” Jasper and his group were then forcibly escorted out of the banquet hall.
Outside, the night air was cool and indifferent. The street in front of the Grand Monarch Hotel was quiet.
Jasper stood on the pavement and stared at nothing.
Victoria pressed her fingers to her temple. “By tomorrow morning, every person in that room will have made at least three phone calls. The main family cutting us off publicly – do you understand what that does to Aether’s stock price? To our position in this city?”
Jasper didn’t answer.
He looked at Rosalind.
“What you did tonight-” His voice cracked at the edges. “That was completely unacceptable. Do you understand me? You cannot behave like that.”
He raised his hand. Rosalind flinched. His hand stopped mid–air, then dropped.
Rosalind burst into tears. “I was defending you! They were being horrible to you and nobody was doing anything!”
