“That is not how we handle things.”

“You never take my side!”

Sienna stepped forward, her expression arranged into something soft and wounded. “She was only trying to protect her father. She’s just a child-”

“Don’t.” Jasper turned on her, and the look in his eyes made her go still. “What’s the deal with that brooch? It’s from the shop you took me to.”

“A synthetic stone, Sienna. Phineas identified it in thirty seconds. In front of everyone.” His voice was very quiet. “I spent a significant amount of money on a fake, and I handed it to Eleanor Everett in front of half the city’s elite. Do you understand what tonight cost me? Not just the money. The money I don’t care about. The rest of it-”

“I didn’t know it was fake.” Her chin lifted. “I’m not a gemologist. How was I supposed to-”

“You recommended the shop.”

They stared at each other.

Victoria glanced toward the hotel entrance, where a bellman was watching them with studied neutrality. “Can we please do this somewhere that isn’t the street?”

Jasper noticed the bellman. He noticed two other hotel staff nearby who had found reasons to stand very still.

He said nothing more. He opened the car door and gestured for his mother and daughter to get in.

Sienna didn’t follow. She stood on the pavement with her arms crossed, her jaw set.

“Fine,” Jasper said, and got in without looking back.

In the car, Rosalind cried herself to sleep against Victoria’s shoulder within ten minutes. Victoria waited until the child’s breathing had steadied, then began to talk. Quietly at first, then with more momentum.

“She did this deliberately,” Victoria said. “Aurora. The timing of that summons, delivered tonight of all nights – that was not coincidence. She knew where we’d be. She wanted us humiliated in public.”

“She’s serious,” he said, almost to himself.

“Of course she’s serious. She’s been planning this. And now with that summons arriving in that room, in front of William Everett-” Victoria pressed her lips together. “She’s been working against us from the beginning.”

“Stop.” Jasper pressed two fingers to his temple. “Just stop talking.”

In the banquet hall, Gavin found Phineas after the last of the obligatory greetings had been made. They settled into adjacent seats, and Gavin lifted his wine glass.

“To a productive evening,” he said, touching it lightly against Phineas’s glass.

Phineas drank.

Gavin set his glass down and looked at him sideways. “You know, most people just send flowers when they want to help someone out. You arrange for your father to personally eject the problem from the building.”

“My father made his own decision.”

“Based on information that was very conveniently available to him.”

Phineas glanced at him. The corner of his mouth moved – not quite a smile, but close.

“Why not call it justice being served?”
