Chapter 53: Victoria Came to Make Trouble–2
“You can’t just-” Leo started.
“You,” Victoria said, turning to him, “are in a hospital bed. I’d suggest saving your energy for more pressing concerns.” Her gaze moved over him with something close to contempt.
“You’re already half in the grave. This doesn’t concern you.”
(Aurora’s POV)
I was in the middle of reviewing a compound analysis when my phone lit up.
All missed calls from Martha.
I stared at the screen for a moment. That specific pattern – that many calls, that close
–
together – never meant anything good.
I called back.
She picked up on the first ring.
“Get to the hospital,” she said, before I could speak. “Right now. Jasper’s mother is here making a scene and you need to come deal with it.”
“Is Leo-”
“Come fix this.”
She hung up.
I stood in the lab for two seconds, then went to find Director Harrison. He was at the whiteboard with a marker in his hand, mid–sentence.
“I need to take a few hours,” I said. “Family emergency.”
He looked at me over his glasses. “We have the compound review this afternoon.”
“Sylvia can cover the first half. I’ll be back before the end of the day.”
He sighed and uncapped his marker again. “Go.”
When I pushed open the door to Leo’s room, I looked at him first.
“How are you feeling?”
“Fine.” He looked at me with an expression that said *I’m sorry you had to come*.

Claim
“How sweet,” Victoria said from the corner. “She shows up for her brother but couldn’t find the time to show up for her marriage.”
I turned to face her.
“You want a divorce?” she said. “Fine. You leave with nothing. Not a cent. Not a single asset. You sign whatever we put in front of you and you walk away clean.”
“Why?” I asked.
“On the grounds that you married into this family with nothing and you’ll leave the same way.”
“I didn’t commit adultery. I fulfilled every obligation of that marriage. I have documentation – photographs – that show Jasper maintained a relationship with Sienna throughout our entire marriage.” I kept my voice level. “I have more than enough grounds to take this to court and
win.”
Victoria stood up from her chair.
“There it is.” Her voice rose. “That’s who you really are. A gold–digger who’s been planning this from the beginning. You think a judge is going to hand you half of everything because you dug up some photographs?”
“I think a judge is going to follow the law,” I said. “And if the Everett family wants to appeal and drag this out, that’s fine. I have time. The only question is whether those photographs stay in a lawyer’s filing cabinet or end up somewhere more public. That depends entirely on how cooperative your side decides to be.”
Victoria’s face went very still.
“You wouldn’t.”
“I’m not threatening anything,” I said. “I’m describing a possible sequence of events.”
