Chapter 54: “Does It Still Hurt?”

(Aurora’s POV)

Victoria went completely still for one second. Then her knees buckled, and she dropped onto the edge of the chair behind her. Her mouth was open, her face slack.

“It’s gone?” she said. “The baby is already gone?”

“Yes.”

She looked at me like I’d spoken in a foreign language. Then something shifted in her expression – the shock curdled into something uglier – and she was on her feet again, her voice rising to a pitch that filled the entire room.

“You killed it.” She pointed at me, her finger shaking. “You murdered my grandchild. You did this deliberately – don’t think I don’t know what you are – you calculated every move from the beginning and now you think you can walk away-”

She came at me.

I grabbed her wrist.

One motion. I turned my body and pushed her sideways, and she stumbled back against the wall, catching herself on the windowsill.

The room went silent.

I looked at her. My voice came out very even.

“You’re ridiculous.” I said. “That child was mine. Not a tool for the Everett family. Not a bargaining chip. Mine.” I let go of her wrist. “Your son never set foot in that hospital. Not once. So don’t stand in front of me and talk about that baby like he belonged to you.”

Victoria straightened up. Her lipstick was slightly smeared. She looked rattled in a way I’d never seen before.

“You want grandchildren?” I said. “Go push Sienna. Although – she’s been with your son for years now and there’s nothing to show for it, so you might want to start adjusting your expectations.”

The color drained from Victoria’s face, then flooded back in.

“Don’t you dare-”

“I’m done,” I said. “We’re done here.”

She grabbed her bag from the chair. “Don’t think you’ll see a single cent from this family.” Her voice cracked on the last word. “Not one cent.”

She slammed the door hard enough to rattle the frame.

The room was quiet again.

I turned around.

Martha was sitting very still in her chair, her hands folded in her lap. Leo was watching me from the bed, his face pale.

“Aurora.” Martha’s voice was careful. Measured. “Is it true? You lost the baby?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“The day Jasper went to Aspen with Sienna.” I sat down in the chair across from her. “I had a prenatal appointment. He didn’t come. I waited for three hours. On the way out, a supply cart came around a corner too fast and knocked me down. I was on the floor for – I don’t know how long. By the time they got me into surgery, it was already over.”

Martha was quiet for a moment.

Then she said, “You should have been more careful.”

I looked at her.

“You were alone in a hospital. You should have had someone with you. You should have called someone. If you’d been paying attention-”

“Mom.” Leo’s voice cut across hers.

“I’m saying what’s true,” Martha said. “The child is gone and the biggest part of that responsibility is on her. She wasn’t careful enough. She wasn’t-”

I counted to three in my head.

Three seconds. That was all it took for something to go very quiet inside me.

“I was on the hospital floor,” I said. My voice came out soft. “I thought I was dying. I wasn’t thinking about Jasper. I wasn’t thinking about the Everetts.” I paused. “I was thinking about whether my mother would come.”

I looked at her for a long moment.

“So thank you,” I said. “For answering that question today.”

I stood up.
