Chapter 54: “Does It Still Hurt?“–2
I walked out. The elevator doors slid closed in front of me.
I pressed the button for the ground floor and watched my own reflection in the polished metal of the doors. Pale face. Dark circles I’d stopped trying to cover.
Victoria would be on the phone with Jasper already.
Claim
He would investigate. He would pull records, call contacts, do exactly what he always did with information – treat it like a business problem to be audited. He’d want to know the facts. He’d want to verify.
I looked at my own reflection.
*Go ahead*, I thought. *The truth doesn’t change because you don’t want to believe it.*
(Author’s POV)
The door clicked shut behind Aurora.
Leo stared at it for a long moment. Then he turned to Martha.
“How could you say that to her?” His voice was raw. “She lost a baby. She was alone on a hospital floor and she almost died, and you told her it was her own fault?”
Martha shifted in her chair. For one brief moment something crossed her face – a flash of something that might have been guilt. But it passed quickly.
“She doesn’t listen,” Martha said. “She never has. She makes her own choices and then expects everyone to feel sorry for her. With Jasper’s resources and connections, she could have had everything. Instead she throws it away and thinks she can fight the Everetts on her own.” She shook her head. “She’ll regret it.”
Leo looked at his mother like he was seeing her clearly for the first time.
He didn’t say anything else. There was nothing left to say.
But he made a decision, quietly, in the back of his mind: if he was the only person left in the world who actually gave a damn about his sister, then he would have to be enough.
Victoria was still in her car when she called Jasper.
He picked up on the second ring.
“She admitted it,” Victoria said. “The baby is gone. She said it’s been gone. She stood there

and told me to my face.”
A pause.
“She was upset,” Jasper said. “She was trying to get a reaction-”
Claim
“Jasper.” Victoria’s voice cut through his. “She said it was the day you went to Aspen.” Her voice dropped. “The day you went skiing with Sienna.”
Silence on the line.
“I want you to find out exactly what happened,” Victoria said. “I want records. I want to know if she terminated that pregnancy deliberately.”
“Mom-”
“Find out.”
The call ended.
Jasper watching the highway markers pass. His chest felt strange – tight in a way he couldn’t
locate or name.
He picked up his phone and called Ethan. “Get Aurora’s prenatal records. And find out if she had a termination procedure.”
“Understood.” Ethan said.
Ethan’s call came in thirty minutes later.
“What did you find?”
Ethan’s voice was careful. Measured. The voice of someone choosing every word.
“The records confirm it. She was at her prenatal appointment alone. While she was waiting, a supply cart struck her in a corridor. She was brought into emergency surgery.” A pause. “The pregnancy couldn’t be saved.”
Jasper said nothing.
The city passed outside the window. He couldn’t feel any of it.
“She was there by herself,” he said. His voice came out flat. Strange.
“Yes.”

He thought about Aspen. The snow. Sienna laughing at something on the ski slope. The way he’d turned his phone to silent because he hadn’t wanted the interruption.
