From the way Matthew spoke, Kelsey could tell immediately that he genuinely wanted information on the Medusa Gang. That alone was enough to confirm—he definitely wasn't one of them.
A relaxed smile spread across her face as she spoke to him gently. "You really gave me a scare, Mr. Larden. I do know a little about what you're asking… but I can't just give it away. You'll need to offer something in return."
Her tone was soft and sweet—completely disarming.
"What kind of payment are you looking for?" Matthew asked. "I can offer a million Dornia Emeralds in exchange for your intel."
He'd brought a few hundred thousand with him when he left the ship, but there were still tens of millions in untouched assets stashed aboard the Medusa Warship.
Kelsey's smile didn't change a bit. "Look at you, Mr. Larden, speaking like we're strangers. How could I possibly take your money?"
Matthew's brow creased slightly. Free things were always the most expensive—he'd learned that the hard way with Luna Theraleo. She hadn't asked for money either—she'd wanted a favor. Specifically, she'd asked him to kill Ronny.
And Ronny wasn't just some random target. He was one of the top figures in District 12. People were offering tens of millions—sometimes even more—for his head. But because Matthew had agreed to Luna's favor, he had taken on the job. A task with nowhere near the equivalent value of the information he'd received.
And now, here was Kelsey, telling him she didn't want money either.
The fear and helplessness drained from Kelsey's face, replaced by a flicker of frustration. Don't men always fall for the damsel-in-distress act? Why wasn't this one taking the bait?
Kelsey let out a sigh. "I can't reveal my identity to you just yet, Mr. Larden. But I wasn't lying—those people are a serious problem. Because of who I am, I can't move against them directly. If I did, it would draw far too much attention to this place. And I think you understand what that would mean."
Matthew nodded thoughtfully. "So, what you need is someone to stand in the spotlight for you. Someone to draw attention away while shielding you from the front. And you think I'm the one for the job, am I right?"
When Kelsey confirmed it, Matthew's expression turned contemplative. His appearance had long since been altered. Even if someone started watching him, they'd be watching Matteo Larden, not Matthew Larson. And if someone came after Matteo Larden… well, what did that have to do with Matthew Larson?
"I'll do it," he said.
