The tunnel light increased the travelers' visibility. Two Medusa Gang members guarded the checkpoint.

The guards straightened when they saw Captain Serpent. The guards greeted him with nervous smiles.

"Captain Serpent, you have not come to headquarters for days. The envoy has been asking about you every day," one guard said politely.

Serpent's eyes flashed anger. His voice cracked the silence. "What, you don't see Captain Sogan here? Open the gates now."

The guards froze from Serpent's sudden roar. Fear flooded their faces as they unlocked the gate.

"Captain Sogan, you may enter right inside," one guard said with trembling respect.

Serpent stepped aside and motioned for Matthew with exaggerated respect.

The guards exchanged confused looks. Their brows furrowed as they wondered why Serpent treated the weakest captain with such deference.

They walked past two more checkpoints. The group finally reached the main hall at headquarters. The chamber size struck him heavily.

The first floor gleamed with gaudy decorations that tried to impress the eye. The expensive finishes gave the hall a tasteless and crude feeling.

Gorgon emblems and grim paintings covered every wall and filled the space with a sickening atmosphere.

Serpent's addiction returned with brutal force. The fit came quickly because he had drunk only a third of the bottle before.

His hands trembled as he took the glass vial from his chest. He lifted the vial carefully and swallowed half of the liquid. The potion steadied his body as the pain receded.

Matthew snatched the last of the Kiss of God from Serpent's hand.

Serpent begged Matthew to return the bottle with a broken voice.

"You will behave," Matthew warned coldly. "If you act stupid, you will not get the last drop."

Matthew had seen through Serpent's plan to bring the potion to headquarters so scientists could make an antidote and free him.

Without the drug, Serpent grew obedient immediately.

The scientist forced a laugh and treated the threat as a crude joke.

"Captain Serpent, you're such a joker," he said.

Serpent's palm slammed across the scientist's face.

Blood welled at the corner of the man's mouth as his vision blurred.

"No one is joking here. Apologize this instant," Serpent said with deadly force.

The scientist paled and dropped to the floor. He crawled to Matthew's boots and pressed his forehead to the ground repeatedly.

"Captain Sogan, I am very sorry I offended you. Please forgive me," the scientist begged.

Matthew's boot kicked the man aside. Matthew ordered him sharply. "Slap yourself a hundred times. Learn to keep your mouth shut."
