The lab tech struck his own face again and again. His cheek turned red and swollen, yet the sting brought him no clarity. He could not understand why Serpent, so feared by many, had suddenly shrunk back in terror before Sogan.
The men in white coats froze at the sight. Their mouths hung wide, but not one dared to move. None of them would scold Matthew when Serpent himself, second only to the envoy, had already bent to him.
"The second floor's the lounge," one of them muttered, his voice shaking. "It's where the captains go to blow off steam. They keep the better materials locked up there, so they can use them whenever they want."
Matthew lifted his eyes. Colorful lights spilled across the balcony above. He saw the captains sunk deep in couches, women draped across their laps. Their eyes gleamed with hunger. Greasy smiles carved their faces as their hands crept over bare skin without a shred of shame.
The girls were nubile. Their beauty had been turned into a weapon against themselves. They arched their backs and forced alluring poses. They clung to the men, debasing themselves in hopes of survival.
Behind the curtains came muffled noises. Low groans and crude laughter leaked through like poison.
Matthew's stomach churned. His gaze hardened with pity.
Beauty had bought them breath, but at a cruel cost. Without death pressing against their throats, none of them would have touched men twice their age whose faces looked like scavengers circling prey.
He moved on and found another line of women shackled against the wall.
"Why are they chained here?" His words came sharp, his jaw set.
"They would rather cut their own throats than let the captains use them," someone answered with a cold laugh. "But the captains aren't ready to lose them. They keep them tied like trophies to stare at."
Matthew's chest tightened. The women wore torn rags that once were clothes. Purple bruises marred their skin, yet their eyes never bent. Their gaze was sharp, refusing to yield even after everything.
A captain strolled toward them, arms slung around two young women clinging to his sides.
"Serpent," he said with a broad grin, "you've been hiding. Haven't seen you upstairs for days. Feefee hasn't let anyone near her. She's been waiting on you."
Serpent's eyes flickered. Hunger stirred inside him, but he locked it deep and smothered it.
"Feefee!" the captain bellowed toward a dark corner. "Serpent's here. Get over here and greet him."

Sogan's woman. The words rattled through the room. Since when had that useless weakling taken a place upstairs?
If Serpent had not declared it, every man here would have written Matthew off as nothing more than Serpent's shadow. Sogan had been nothing but a failure at headquarters.
Feefee's ears caught Serpent's tone. The defiance drained from her. She set down her glass, rose to her feet, and walked toward them.
Matthew's eyes followed her. She stood out from every other woman in the room.

"Feefee," Serpent said. His voice was low, unsteady. "From this moment on, you belong to Captain Sogan. Make sure you give him everything he asks for."
His eyes flicked toward Matthew, ordering her with a look. Yet inside, his gut twisted with grief.
Every man in the gang knew Feefee was the dream they all wanted.
