Thorne kept his face tight. "Ms. Panacea, we just want to finalize this transaction as quickly as possible."
"I want that too," Serena said, her tone growing increasingly annoyed. "So, get the equipment ready, pass the audit, I'll sign the papers, and you take him. Is that so hard to understand?"
Thorne's face twitched, his fingers curling slowly into fists by his sides.
"Of course, if you feel this process is too tedious or out of your reach, you can negotiate with the ship directly." Serena was kind enough to offer an alternative. "Get a direct waiver from The Commodore to bypass this requirement and revoke my medical oversight."
"Bring me the waiver, and I'll comply instantly. You can negotiate the departure time with the ship, and I won't hold you up for a single minute longer."
Her stance couldn't be clearer.
She wasn't attached to Specimen Fourteen, and she didn't care when the buyers took it away.
She took the ship's money and did her job.
If someone wanted her to take the fall for something she wasn't responsible for, they could go cry to the boss.
Her words caused the ship's directors to exchange subtle glances.
Go to The Commodore?
It sounded easy, but who would actually dare?
Thorne certainly didn't dare, which made his expression sour even further.
The Commodore of Project Zero-Transit was notoriously elusive.
Even though Obsidian Sun and Project Zero-Transit had collaborated for years, the number of times they had spoken directly to The Commodore could be counted on one hand.
More importantly...
Project Zero-Transit had thrived in the high seas' gray markets for years entirely because of its draconian rules.
Not even Obsidian Sun had managed to persuade The Commodore to bend certain rules in all these years.
