“Jake,” Mom says in her warning voice.

But Granny Kate holds up her hand. “Let him finish.”

“I filmed you because Mom was sad,” I continue. “She thinks you hate her. Hate me. And I wanted to know your weakness like in the game so we could win you over. But…”

“But we are good people. Mom is really smart and works really hard and she loves me and she loves daddy and she has enough love for you too if you let her love you. And I’m good at school and I draw good pictures and I’ll draw lots of pictures for you if you let me be your great grandson. We don’t want to take Mr. Ethan away from you. We want to share him with you. We want to be a family. A bigger family, with you and daddy in it.”

Granny Kate just looks at me. Her face is still that scary composed face. I start getting nervous when she doesn’t say anything for a long time.
