Chapter 140
(Sabrina’s POV)
“No! Of course not!” I shake my head, finally speaking out.
Ethan chuckles, and I realize I fell for his trick. “You-”
He wraps his arms around me and pulls me out of my seat. I forget what I was going to say when his warmth seeps into me, our bodies pressing tight together.
“Good. Because even if you do want to leave, I’m not going to let you.” He kisses me on the forehead, and grins. “Now tell me. Who have you been talking to?”
“Does it matter?”
“Yes. Because it sounds like someone’s been feeding you rumors, making you question our bond.”
He’s right. But that doesn’t make the doubt less real.
“I overheard Rosalie and Kate talking,” I admit. “About board concerns. Shareholder perception. How my background might affect your position as CEO.”
Ethan’s jaw tightens. “When was this?”
“Two days ago. At the estate.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“I needed time to process. To figure out for myself if what she said was truth or false.”
“What exactly did you hear?”
I tell him about the conversation. About Uncle James and the actress. About stock prices
and corporate image.
When I’m finished, Ethan is very still.
“Rosalie set that up,” he says quietly. “Made sure you’d overhear. Made sure you’d doubt.”
“Maybe. But the articles are real and so is the risk.”
“The risk exists. I’m not denying that. But I’ve known about it from the beginning.”
“And you still chose me?”

“Of course. You’re the one I love.”
“Are you out of your mind? What if loving me costs you everything you’ve built?”
“Then I’ll build something else.”
“You don’t mean that-”
Claim
“I absolutely mean that.” He rests his forehead against mind, cupping my cheek. “Sabrina. I spent over seventeen years building wealth, a reputation, and a name for myself. And none of it combined made me as happy as I am right now with you and Jake.”
“But-”
“No buts. I would give up the CEO position tomorrow if it meant keeping you. I would walk away from Hale Global. From the estate. From all of it. Because none of it would hold any meaning for me anymore without you and Jake in my life.”
“You can’t mean that.”
“I do. And the fact that you don’t believe me is exactly what Rosalie was counting on.”
He’s right. I know he’s right.
But history has proven that love fades with time. If one day in the future Ethan suddenly comes to his senses, and regrets marrying me, neither I nor Jake would be able to handle the
blow.
And that’s my true concern.
Ethan not wanting Jake anymore. My son…he won’t be able to handle the blow.
He’s come to love, to trust Ethan so much, it frightens me at times. He didn’t even trust Dustin a fraction of how much he trusts Ethan.
So I need to talk to Kate.
She’s the only one I can think of to turn to for an honest, unbiased advice right now.
“I…I’ll be going to the estate to meet your grandmother tomorrow. Can you look after Jake for me while I’m gone?”
Ethan frowns, probably seeing his words haven’t gotten through to me. But he doesn’t argue. Just squeezes my hands once and lets go.
“When are you meeting her?”

Chapter 140
“Ten in the morning.”
“Do you want me to come with?”
“No. This needs to be just us. Woman to woman. Future grandmother to future daughter-in-law.”
If I’m still going to be that.
“Call me if anything comes up.”
I nod, and we finish the rest of dinner in silence.
Ethan leaves an hour later. The house feels empty without him.
I check on Jake. He’s asleep. Or pretending to be. Either way, I don’t wake him.
Just sit on the edge of his bed and watch him.
I want to give him stability. Security. A family that doesn’t fall apart.
But I don’t know if I can give him that anymore.
(Kate’s POV)
Sabrina arrives at the estate exactly at ten.
Clay
Mrs. Zander shows her in. She looks exhausted. Dark circles under her eyes. Hair pulled back in a simple ponytail. No makeup. No armor.
I don’t acknowledge the slight disappointment I feel as seeing her come alone.
Hmph! It’s not like I was expecting to see that kid anyway. He’s an annoying chatterbox, always asking about this and that every other second.
It’s good he’s not here.
I would’ve had to deal with his questions nonstop.
Though… the house does feel a little quiet…and empty…and…hmph!
So what. Just a bad habit. I must’ve gotten used to the noise lately, and that’s why the house feels so quiet.
But that doesn’t mean I miss him.
And why would I?
