As I stood on the front porch, watching Cash drive away to meet Mazie, wondered if her call was a sign from above telling me what I was doing was wrong. Her call had unusual timing, as I was fully giving into the delusion that I could have both brothers, especially from the passionate way Cash was kissing me.

God only knows what would have transpired if she hadn’t called, because the kiss was heated from the very start, as it held so much pentup lust and desire, not just on my end, but Cash’s end too. It wasn’t just the lust and the desire that was fueling the moment that had happened between us, but also the feelings we both had for each other came rushing from the depths within us, whère we had hidden them.

Honestly, I didn’t know what I thought would come out of giving into my desires for him and this delusion, but what had actually come out of it was confusion and the feeling that I had broken something between Chance and me. My mind felt like it was overloaded, as it was trying to process the feelings I had for each of them, as my stomach now had butterflies, and my heart felt like it was aching.

If I thought that I was a mess with the feelings I had for Cash before, I was now even more of a mess, as I was now second guessing if I should have given into the thought of having them both. But what was done, was done, and I knew there was no turning back on what had just happened between us, as there was no way that I could lock back up the feelings I had for him.

The screen door to the house creaked open at that moment, startling me, making me turn to see Evan stepping outside onto the porch, as his eyes were focused on the lane where Cash had just disappeared.

Where did Cash run off to this morning? He finally asks me as he moves to take a seat on one of the rocking chairs, with a cup of coffee in his hand.

I don’t know. Mazie called him and said she needed his help.

Evan took a sip of his coffee, before he shook his head and said to me, One would think the two of them were a thing, but we both know that isn’t the case.

I wondered at that moment if Evan knew about Mazie too, but it wasn’t my place to find out, as her secret was safe with me. So, instead of questioning him, I just shook my head, agreeing with him, as! said, The two of them are like two peas in a pod, and they are lucky to have each other.”

That they are, but they aren’t the only ones around here that are lucky to have each other.Evan now says, making me look at him with a bit of confusion on my face, as I wondered what he was talking about.

But he didn’t leave me to wonder too long, before he said to me, My boys are very fortunate to have you, but I just wish that you being here was under different circumstances. I believe by now you have figured out that your mother and I were more than just friends. Even after all these years and moving on, I still haven’t gotten over her leaving.”

I stared at Evan in disbelief that he was finally being honest with me about his relationship with my mother, and I wondered if this was my chance to find out from him what truly happened all those years ago to make her leave.

Taking a seat next to him, I decided to take my shot at finding out the truth, as I asked him, Why did my mother leave here?

Evan took another sip of his coffee as he stared straight ahead, as if he was in deep thoughts about what I had just asked him, while he remained silent not answering my question, making me think that I had overstepped asking him. I was just about to apologize to him for asking, when he finally said to me, It’s complicated.
