Seeing that she wasn’t going to answer me about why we were here, I decided to ask her, “So, what did you exactly tell Raven to get her to come around with me?”

Mazie’s head turned to finally look at me, before she turned back to searching through the files on the

shelves, making me think that she wasn’t going to answer my question, but then she said to me, “I just told

her that your family was different and that you share a mate among brothers born into your family. She

actually took it quite better than I expected.”

Mazie then lets out a chuckle, before she adds, “Although she at first thought your family was in some

kind of cult, but I assured her that wasn’t the case.”

“A cult?” I questioned her, thinking that it might be much worse for her to think of us verses just telling

Raven the truth.

“I don’t know. You know humans and their weird relationships. Do you know that there are religions where

a man takes multiple wives? Plus, I have seen online where couples have open marriages, where they

bring another person into their marriage. So, trust me, what I told her wasn’t so crazy as it may sound to

you.”

I was going to ask Mazie how and why she knew this, but then I decided not to, as I was sure it was

because she had always wondered where she would fit in, and be accepted for who she truly was. Of

course, Chance and I accepted her, but she was leery about what the pack members would think of her, especially her father.

Mazie at that moment let out a growl of frustration as she took a step back from the shelves, telling me

she wasn’t finding what she was looking for. Under her breath she says to herself, “Why the hell is there

nothing before the Ryder family?”

Moving to her side, I looked at the dates on the files, seeing them dating back to my greatest grandfather, who was the first Alpha of our pack, wondering what she thought she was going to find before him. It was well known that he was the first Alpha of our pack, and the Alpha who had settled us here in Beaumont,

claiming the territory as ours.

Turning to look at a frustrated Mazie, I said to her, “I can’t help you unless you tell me what you are looking

for.”

“Why, so you can scold me like Chance did?” She says, moving from in front of me, letting out another growl of frustration, while she moved further back into the room, as if she still had hopes of finding whatever it was that she was looking for.

“Why did Chance scold you?” I asked her, as I turned to follow her to the back of the room, wondering what had happened yesterday, after I had taken off after the rogue that had attacked Raven.

Mazie didn’t stop walking until she reached the back of the room, where there was a small window. Staring out the window, Mazie stood there in complete silence, and I could tell that it was bothering her

that my brother had scolded her, but honestly couldn’t understand why he had.

Finally, Mazie takes a deep breath, before she says to me, “Chance thinks that I left Raven to die at the

hands of the rogue.

“Did you?” I asked her, now feeling my brother’s frustration with her as my own, because if Mazie did indeed leave Raven to fend for herself against the rogue, then this changes the way I look at her.

Mazie finally turned around to look at me, and it was clear that she didn’t like that I was questioning her loyalty to me or my brother. With tears now forming in her eyes, she says to me, “Goddess no. I didn’t leave her because I was scared or because I didn’t want to protect her. I left her behind because she ordered me to, but Chance doesn’t believe me that she holds the power to do so.”

Shaking my head at Mazie, I had to side with my brother on this one, as Raven was just a mere human, and there was no way that she could have ordered Mazie to leave her. Taking a step back from her, now frustrated with her, I said to her, “I can’t believe you left her. That rogue could have killed her. She is just a mere human and had no way to defend herself from it.”

Mazie let out a cry, before she said to me, “You don’t think I know that? You don’t think that I wanted to stay and protect my best friend? I am telling you Cash, she gave me an Alpha’s order.”

Tears began to pour down Mazie’s cheeks, and I could see that Mazie thought she was telling me the truth, but how on earth was I supposed to believe that Raven, a mere human, was capable of giving an Alpha’s order?

Giving Mazie the benefit of the doubt, because she had been my trusted friend and my Beta to be, I said to her, “Say I believe you. How do you explain that it is even possible?”

“Don’t you get it? That is why I am here, but obviously I am not going to find what I am looking for, because nothing dates back that far. It’s like nothing existed before your family took over as the Alpha of this pack.”

Shaking my head at her, knowing that she was talking nonsense, I said to her, “Mazie, that’s because the

pack didn’t exist before us.”

“Our pack, but I believe there was already a pack here before us, and I believe that Raven’s ancestors were

r a part of that pack.”

I took a deep breath, trying to keep my patience with Mazie, but what she had convinced herself of being the truth and what was reality were two very different things. It was clear that she was upset with herself for leaving Raven behind, and in her mind, she conjured up this alternate reality that clearly didn’t exist.

Knowing that I couldn’t let her continue with this nonsense, I said to her, “Do you know how ridiculous you

sound right now? There would have been something in our pack history telling us about a great war for

the territory, and I have never seen or heard of anything remotely referring to that.”

“But you have, and you dismissed it, just like you are dismissing what I am trying to tell you to be the truth. Raven is one of us, and I am going to prove it.”
