Chapter 12-2
Clam
“The first aid kits in the bathroom. I will get it.” I heard his grandmother say, as Chance swooped me up in his arms, carrying me into the living room, sitting me gently down on the couch.
“How bad is it?” I asked him, as I couldn’t bear to look.
“Bad enough to cause you to bleed.” He told me in a serious tone, as his grandmother returned with the
first aid kit, while the sound of the timer on the oven went off.
“I got this.” Chance tells her, as he grabs the first aid kit from her, before she hurries off towards the
kitchen.
Opening the first aid kit, he begins to pull out the items within it, before he says to me, “This may sting a
bit.”
He didn’t even give me a second to think about what he was about to do, before he poured the cool liquid over my cut, making it instantly feel like it was on fire, as I let out a hiss.
“Sting my ass.” I said to him through gritted teeth, as I closed my eyes, trying to hold back my tears, as I
bear down the pain.
“I’m sorry.” He said to me, making me open my eyes, because I knew by the sound of his voice, he was
actually sincere this time.
Biting my bottom lip, I remained silent, as I began to feel guilty about throwing him under the bus like I had to his grandmother. In all reality, I knew it was my fault that I ended up walking, because I refused his offer
to take me home and accused him of trying to get me alone. It was clear that he knew I would end up
eventually at his house, and that he wasn’t worried when he saw me walking towards it.
As I watched him gently bandage my hand up, it was apparent this wasn’t the first time he had done this, making me wonder how he was so good at this. Feeling the need to break the ice between us, I said to
him, “You’re pretty good at this.”
“My mother was a nurse, and with two brothers, one of us was always getting hurt.” He explained to me, and it was the first time that I had heard any of them speak of her, but I could see the pain in his eyes now
that he had.
Hating seeing the pain in his eyes, knowing how hard it was to lose a parent, I tried to lighten the mood by saying, “My mother was an attorney, and thankfully the only thing I ever had to use her degree for, was to get out of a speeding ticket.” But as I made the joke, my own heart began to ache, missing my own mother, making me look away from him.
I felt his thumb gently caress the back of my hand that he had just bandaged, and I closed my eyes, taking in his delicate touch, as it had been the first time someone had tried to ease my pain since my parents had passed away.
To be honest, I had no one to really talk to about my grief, because even my close friends were taken away

from me when they threw me in the institution. Hell, I didn’t even get the chance to say my final goodbyes to my parents, as they were both cremated directly after the accident. I guess in a way I was holding in a lot of trauma, just like my Shrink said I was, but even realizing this now, I couldn’t allow myself to fully
grieve.
Chance cleared his throat at that moment, and I turned back to look at him, seeing the look of sadness still present in his eyes. As he finally opens his mouth to say something to me, Cash comes walking into the living room and freezes when he sees us sitting on the couch together, as he says, “I didn’t know we
had company.” While his eyes move to my hand in Chance’s.
Chance quickly releases my hand, while he moves to stand up, as he says, “Raven here got lost on her
walk home.”
Cash’s eyes narrowed as he looked at his brother, while he said to him, “Why was she walking? I assumed you would take her home.”
Chance moved toward his brother with the first–aid kit in his hand, handing it to him, as he said, “I’ll let her
explain that to you.” As he stepped out of the room, leaving Cash staring at me bewildered, but he wasn’t
the only one now feeling that way, as I had to wonder how Chance had flipped his switch so fast with the
moment, I thought that we just shared.
