Chapter 103-1
Raven’s POV
“I think it might be best if you take a seat.” Evan says empathetically to me, as Chance’s hand instantly moves to the small of my back to let me know that he was here with me, before he guides me back to the couch, taking a seat right next to me, while Evan moves the rest of the way into the living room.
Evan looked beyond exhausted, like he had been up the entire night, investigating my grandmother’s corpse’s sudden appearance at her home. I was slowly beginning to realize that Evan wasn’t just a ranch owner in this town, and that people of this town looked up to him, while he seemed to be all over the place with his hands in everything, leaving little time for the ranch.
Thankfully, his sons, especially Cash and Chance, helped him out, keeping the ranch going, because Evan looked to be running himself too thin. There was no doubt that my situation wasn’t helping him physically or mentally, because I knew it had to be bringing up old memories, memories that I planned on eventually asking him about.
But right now, I am waiting to hear the news about what they had discovered with my grandmother, hoping that it could help point us all in the right direction with who was responsible for what was happening here.
Evan scratched nervously at the week–old facial hair that had grown in on his face, as he was clearly trying to find the words to say to me. Finally, his eyes met with mine, and through a disturbed look on his face, he said to me, “Your grandmother was poisoned.”
A sigh of relief came from my lips, knowing that whoever had done this didn’t cover their tracks completely, leaving behind at least the evidence of the poison, so that the authorities knew that she didn’t pass on her own accord. My grandmother’s death wouldn’t thankfully be chalked up as natural causes, and the person responsible would be sought out, and hopefully found so that he can pay for his crime of murder.
“Unfortunately, that isn’t the only thing the Coroner found.” Evan then adds, as he puts his head down, while I watched him nervously kick his foot at the hardwood floors beneath his feet, obviously upset with
what else he had to tell me.
Evan’s hesitation was not only killing me, but also Chance, making Chance speak up by asking, “What is it father?” As he too couldn’t take the suspense of not knowing what else had been found.
Evan’s eyes moved from the floor directly to me, and then to Chance, before he said just above a whisper, “Her heart had been removed.”
“What?” I asked, as I gasped, wondering who the hell could be so demented to do such a thing, as I couldn’t even famine what the individual would even do with a damn heart.
Chance began to rub rny back, trying to calm me, but I was beyond being able to calm down, as my grandmother’s remains had been desecrated. Even in death, my grandmother had been violated by this individual, and all I wanted to do was make this person pay for what he had done to her.
Abruptly I stood, as anger filled me, along with determination to find her killer. I had no clue where I was even going to start, or how I was going to make this person pay, but I felt a drive inside of me wanting to see justice for her. My mother had put a lot of murderers behind bars over her years of being a lawyer, but I didn’t even know if jail time for this individual would make me feel better. I now know why there was the

saying, an eye for an eye, because right now, it was the only thought of justice I saw fit for the crime.
“Are there any leads on who did this? Did the individual leave behind any fingerprints or evidence pointing us towards who he is?” I asked, praying that there was something to at least point me in the right direction to start hunting this individual down.
