Chapter 103-2

Evan extended his hands towards me, placing them on my shoulders, before he said to me, “Raven, that I can’t disclose to you. Plus, you need to leave this up to the authorities to take care of. I promise you that we will do everything in our power to find the person responsible for this.”

My head began to shake, as I didn’t feel like that was enough. In my eighteen years of being here on this planet, I have never had a mean streak in my body, but right here and now, I felt like something was changing inside of me, and I was tired of being beaten down by what the world had to dish at me. I had lost everything that ever meant anything to me, and I had lost my last living relative, giving me no solid connection to this life anymore.

My mind at that moment went to Chase and the promise he had made to me last night that he would find the person responsible for this. Right now, I knew he was my only hope of finding out the truth, because it was clear that his father and his brothers were going to want me to sit back and allow the authorities to do their job, but I had little faith in them bringing the person to justice.

After everything I had been through and knowing that this person was somehow connected to what happened all those years ago with my mother, I knew there was only one way of stopping this for good, and that was to make sure that the person responsible didn’t have the opportunity to take another breath on this planet. I know how harsh that it may sound, but I didn’t want to lose another person that I cared about, and if this was the only way to ensure that, then I would do what was necessary to protect those that were left.

Realizing that Evan wasn’t going to give up any more information to me, I nodded my head, making him think that I was agreeing to let the authorities handle it, all while I just wanted to go and find Chase and tell him what his father had just disclosed to me.

Evan then gave me a soft smile before he nodded his head back at me, as he said, “Good.” But then turned to look at Chance before he said, “I know you were looking forward to spending the weekend alone with Raven on this business trip, but I believe it would be best if you took along your brothers and Raven’s friends.”

With everything that had been happening, I had totally forgotten about the trip I was supposed to take alone with Chance this weekend. By the look on Chance’s face, he wasn’t too happy to have to be sharing it with his brothers and my friends, as I knew he was very much looking forward to it, especially after the

r little make–out session we had in his truck.

“Fine, but they are getting a separate hotel room.” Chance tells his father, clearly unhappy, but I too believed it would be safer to have them all with us on the trip, since I found out that they were planning on staying until Monday morning.

“Trip?” Mazie questions as she walks into the living room carrying a cup of tea in her hands, extending the warm cup towards me to take.

“Yes, trip, and I think it is best if you go along too, to keep Raven’s friends company.” Evan says, extending the invite to Mazie to join us, as Mazie tried to hold back her excitement, but I knew her too well, and I could see that she was excited about leaving this town for the weekend.

As the three of them began to talk about the arrangements, I spotted Chase out of the corner of my eye outside the window, making me sit the cup of tea down on the end table, as I moved to go outside to talk

to him. But as I make my way out the front door, Chase is nowhere in sight, even though his jeep is still parked in the front of the house.

I decided to check around the side of the house, thinking that maybe he had headed to the barn to do his morning chores and, sure enough, I immediately noticed movement inside the barn. Stepping off the front porch, I began to walk towards the barn, knowing that if he wasn’t inside the barn then it had to be Cash. Either way, I needed to talk to him too, as I didn’t want him to think that I was just taking off and leaving him behind, because that wasn’t what I was doing.

But as I began to make my way down towards the barn, I heard two familiar voices going at it, making me realize that Chase and Cash were both in the barn together in the middle of a dispute. Praying that it had nothing to do with yesterday, I picked up my pace, not wanting the two of them to fight, especially about

1. me.

I was just about to the barn to intervene, when I froze directly in the middle of my next step. Within the darkness of the barn were two glowing copper eyes staring back at me. My heart began to race in my chest, as I knew the shape of those eyes better than anyone, as they were the shape and size of the two glowing red eyes that haunted my dreams.
