Raven’s POV
“Liam!” I screamed, as my hand moved to reach for him, but Chase’s grip tightened around my waist, drawing my body back to the floor.
Tears now flowed freely down my cheeks, as I watched in complete horror the darkness manifesting before my eyes, knowing that it had grown stronger because of me. I should have known that wherever evil lives no good should come from it, but of course, it was another lesson that I had to learn the hard way.
By allowing the darkness to come forth, I had opened a can of worms that never should have been opened, leaving me now to see the damage I had caused, but there was one good thing that had come from it. I now knew that it was a damn parasite, living off those that it had been cursed to, leaving me to believe that it could be reversed.
Jesus, when you think about it, Liam and I were totally screwed from birth, given that both sides of our mother’s roots were bound to some freaking curse, but luckily for him, I seemed to be the only one with my wolf bounded. But right now, I wasn’t so sure that Liam having a wolf was going to do him any good, because this fight my grandfather was picking wasn’t a battle of who was physically the strongest.
There was no doubt in my mind that Liam was mentally strong too, as he developed the right techniques to keep this curse of ours at bay, but now that this darkness had fed upon me and our grandfather, I wasn’t sure if Liam would be strong enough to withstand it. Honestly, I had no clue how our grandfather was even standing at this point on his own free will, leaving me to believe that he was nothing but an empty shell, being controlled by something more sinister than himself.
“Step back old man.” Liam warned him, moving into a defensive stance, but Liam’s voice for the first time today sounded hesitant and reserved, as if he was unsure of himself.
I mustn’t have been the only one that had sensed his hesitation, because his words were followed by a demonic–sounding laughter. Looking straight at our grandfather, it clearly wasn’t coming directly from him, but from whatever evil was dwelling inside this darkness.
As its laughter continued, my eyes slowly moved from Liam to Lexi, knowing if there was one person in this room that could stop this madness, it was her. But as my eyes landed on her. I instantly realized that she was in just as much of a state of fear as I was, making me believe that she had never seen it this much in control before.
Her little vials of potions were clearly not going to work in this case, but maybe if she could
pull her shit together, then she might be able to freeze it long enough so that we could all get the hell out of here. But unfortunately, Lexi’s eyes were frozen on the darkness growing in size by the second, and by the evident fear in her eyes, it looked like she was on the verge of bolting, leaving us to deal with this situation on our own.
There was no way in hell I was going to allow her to just walk out on us, after it had been her, that had locked us in this room in the first place. After everything she had put me through, she owed me, and right now I was going to collect, not just to save my own damn hide, but to save those that I love so dearly in this room with me now.
Turning my head, I took one last look at Liam, noticing that he was remaining patient but standing his ground, waiting for the darkness to make the first move. I, on the other hand, had no patients, and I knew what he was about to get hit with, as I had almost lost myself to it just moments ago.
Noticing that Chase was quite a bit weaker from my grandfather’s alpha’s presence, I saw this as my opening to escape his grasp, so that I could make it to Lexi before she bolted. Mustering as much strength as I could, I pulled myself from Chase’s arms, and before he could make a feeble attempt to reach for me, I had crawled out of his reach. With a loud thud, Chase’s body landed chest first on the floor, with his hand extended in my direction, lying motionless.
