“I don’t know about that grandmother honestly told her as I finally took a sip of my warm milk, instantly feeling it calming my nerves, but I didn’t know if it was the warm milk or my little conversation with my grandmother that was actually making me feel at ease. Regardless of what it was, I finally felt like I could get some much–needed sleep.
It took everything I had in me the next morning to pull myself out of bed when my alarm had gone off, but I knew that I couldn’t hide in this house forever. Plus, after I had finally relaxed last night, I thought long and hard about the monster that had me cornered in the locker room, and I wanted to know what it was.
If this thing was the reason for my mother leaving here, and it was somehow connected to Ethan’s death, then I couldn’t let this go. There had to be a reason that this thing had shown itself to me after all these years, and when I look back it could have killed me on the spot, but instead, it just stood there hovering over me, staring me straight in the eyes, as if it didn’t know what to do with me.
I honestly don’t know what it would have done to me in the end, but Chance coming to my rescue had scated it off, which is unusual if you ask me, because why would a monster of its magnitude be scared off by his presence?
“Raven. Your ride is here.” My grandmother called out to me once again from the living room, with the cheery tone she had used yesterday, telling me that it had to be Chance that had come for me this
morning.
Grabbing my backpack, I headed out of my room but paused in my step when I saw Cash sitting on the
couch talking to my grandmother. My grandmother was laughing away in her recliner chair, from
something funny Cash must have said to her, as happy tears looked like they were filling her eyes.
“You really need to come over for dinner on Sunday. My grandmother would love to see you, and she could
tell you some more stories.” Cash tells her, and her laughter comes to a halt, as she says back to him, “Oh,
I don’t know about that. It has been years since I left this house.”
“More of a reason to. Plus, I believe my grandmother misses you, as she talks about the fun times you two used to have when you were my age. Things haven’t been the same for her since my grandfather and his brother passed away, and she could use a good cheering up by seeing you.”
The look of pain filled my grandmother’s eyes, before she finally shook her head and said, “I know your grandmother’s pain better than anyone else. Maybe it is time for a visit with her.”
“Great. Then I will let her know you’re coming on Sunday.”
My grandmother looked down, drawing her lips into a straight line, making me wonder why going to dinner at the Ryder’s house was affecting her this way, especially since she was so happy when each of them had put a smile on her face coming here to take me to school. But something was telling me that it had to do
with their grandmother, making me wonder what their story was.
Seeing that my grandmother needed a break from the conversation, I cleared my throat, drawing their
