Raven’s POV

All the ease that I had been feeling knowing that the thing that tried to attack me was just a wild creature from this area, it all went out the window, knowing that it had killed someone. I had heard of wild animal attacks before, with people getting mauled by bears while camping, but I had never heard of one coming into a town, targeting humans.

My theory of the rogue wolf having rabies is the only thing that made a bit of sense, knowing that it made animals go mad, but even at that, this whole situation was crazy. I couldn’t get past that the rogue wolf had tried to attack me twice at school, making me wonder if it was my damn perfume or something drawing it to me.

Plus, I now can’t dismiss the story my grandmother told me about my mother seeing the same kind of creature. I wanted to believe this was all a coincidence, but after hearing about Josie, and seeing Mazie now in her state, it made me question what the hell was really happening here. It also made me want to investigate what happened to Ethan Ryder all those years ago and figure out if it was the real reason why my mother had left this town.

With the news of Josie’s death, the whole town went on high alert with the news, and all

after-school activities had been canceled until further notice, which I was more than okay

with, because I didn’t have to deal with Jessica.

Unfortunately, I had to deal with something far worse than Jessica, and that was Mazie, who was getting lost to the same darkness that had taken over me, when I saw my parents’ deaths. Unlike me though, Mazie feared being alone, and with her parents out of town for business, I did the right thing by having her stay with me.

In a way, it was good for us both, as I found myself not wanting to be alone anymore, making me realize that I was on the right path to healing. Although I had never met Josie, her death was an eye-opener to how precious life was, making me now grateful to have survived the

car accident.

Unfortunately, with Josie’s death, the Diner was left shorthanded, and Mazie’s boss called her, begging her to come back to work. In a way, it was good for Mazie to be forced back into her life, but it also gave me time alone that I needed to visit the town’s library, where I hoped to find archives of the local newspaper, in hopes that there was an article or at least an obituary for Ethan.

With the library only a block away from the Diner, I rode into town with Mazie, having her drop me off at the library, as I lied to her, telling her that I needed to go there to work on a paper for the college course I was taking. I hated the fact that I was lying to her, but she had enough

on her plate right now, and I honestly needed to do this on my own.

Upon entering the library, I realized that this may be a bit harder of a task than I anticipated, as it seemed like it hadn’t been updated for decades, but thankfully the kind librarian pointed me to an old computer that held the archives of the town’s newspaper.

As I waited for the computer to slowly boot up, I looked around the library, noticing how dead

it was. I wondered if it was because of Josie’s death or if it was because no one in this town,

but the older generation used it, as there were only a handful of people in it around my grandmother’s age, all staring at me with curious eyes.

Putting my head down, I looked back at the computer, not wanting to draw too much attention to myself, as the home screen finally displayed on the monitor. Typing in the year that my mother left here, I began to look through the headlines and the obituaries.

A good hour must have passed, and I was only in the month of April, as I began to wonder if this was a lost cause. There was nothing thus far that had caught my eye, as the paper was only filled with gibberish about the town’s affairs dealing with local events taking place. Back then, it seemed like this town had an endless number of community events, but since I arrived here, I hadn’t heard of one event taking place, making me wonder why they had all stopped.
