The morning sun slanted through the trees around Moonflare, painting the clearing in gold and shadow. The packhouse was quiet inside, the guardians resting, the younger wolves still asleep and our son clinging to Asher, already babbling in the soft morning light. Outside, the air hummed with anticipation. Today wasn’t just another training session. Today, Taryn and Justin would face the trials that would truly cement their place in the pack.
I adjusted my stance near the edge of the clearing, Asher by my side. “This isn’t about proving strength.” I said quietly. “It’s about proving you understand what it means to be part of Moonflare. The pack comes first, always.”
The two new members stood at attention, eyes bright but tense. Taryn’s posture was alert, determined. Justin’s expression was calm, calculating, but I could see the tension in his jaw. Both of them understood that this wasn’t a game.
The first trial was mental. A simulation of pack coordination under stress. I had set up several markers in the clearing, representing threats, injured wolves, and vulnerable positions. Wolves had to navigate the field, prioritize, and communicate.
“Go.” I said, and Taryn and Justin sprang into action.
Taryn moved quickly, assessing the markers. She first ran to the “injured” wolf, kneeling beside a dummy, her hands moving deftly to stabilize it. She barked orders to an imaginary pack, telling them to secure the perimeter. Every action was deliberate, confident. She didn’t rush blindly, didn’t falter, and kept her focus sharp.
Justin’s approach was different. He moved methodically, scanning each marker, analyzing threats before acting. He didn’t leap immediately into action but coordinated a path, ensuring that no part of the field was left unprotected. When a “predator” marker appeared suddenly. A wolf–shaped obstacle rigged to lunge but he intercepted it with precision, redirecting it safely while maintaining control over the scenario.
I watched closely, noting their instincts, their ability to think under pressure, their adaptability. This wasn’t just a test of skill; it was a test of judgment, of understanding the responsibilities that came with being Moonflare.
When the mental trial concluded, I allowed them a brief pause, during which the younger wolves watched intently. They were learning not just from observation but from example. Taryn and Justin had to prove not only themselves but show that new members could strengthen the pack, not just survive within it.
Next came the physical trial: a combination of speed, agility, and teamwork. A short obstacle

course had been set up. A mix of natural and constructed barriers, including logs, low branches, and a series of small walls. But there was a twist. They had to move together, covering each other’s weaknesses. Moonflare didn’t reward lone wolves.
Taryn went first, leading the way. She vaulted over a log, landed lightly, and held a rope ladder steady while Justin climbed. Justin followed, supporting Taryn as they encountered a swinging obstacle. Their coordination was instinctive, almost seamless. When one hesitated, the other compensated. I could see the pack watching, nodding approval at their synergy.
Midway through the course, a simulated threat appeared. A pack of shadow wolves, conjured as illusions to test focus. They darted out, snapping and lunging. Taryn and Justin didn’t falter. Taryn’s hands glowed faintly with her Moonbound attunement, protective energy radiating outward. Justin moved in tandem, deflecting and redirecting the illusions while keeping their path clear.
By the time they completed the physical trial, they were breathing hard but triumphant. The pack’s tension had eased into quiet admiration. These weren’t just strong wolves. They were thoughtful, precise, and loyal.
Finally, I brought them to the last trial. The test of character. I had set up a scenario that would challenge their morals, instincts, and understanding of pack ethics. A young wolf, a new recruit, had been “poisoned” by a trap meant to simulate a threat from another pack. The solution wasn’t just to remove the poison. It required assessing risk, calling for help, and making decisions under pressure that could affect others‘ safety.
Taryn acted first. She crouched beside the “injured” wolf, assessing the situation calmly. “We need to stabilize him before we can move.” She murmured, issuing clear instructions to the imaginary pack. She mixed the proper herbs I had prepared earlier, her hands steady despite
the pressure.
Justin took his turn, evaluating the surrounding “danger zones,” making sure the area was safe for both the injured wolf and anyone assisting. He moved efficiently, communicating clearly, and coordinated with Taryn without hesitation. Together, they executed the scenario perfectly.
I stepped back, feeling the hum of the Moonbound bond throughout the clearing. “You have passed every test.” I said, my voice carrying. “You’ve shown intelligence, loyalty, adaptability, and courage. More importantly, you’ve shown that you understand what it means to be part of this pack. Not just to survive, but to protect, guide, and strengthen.”
The pack exhaled as one, a wave of acceptance flowing outward. The guardians lowered their heads slightly, acknowledging the new wolves with a faint, approving rumble. Gage whistled softly, smirking but clearly impressed. Arlo nodded, his hand on his mate’s shoulder,

Taryn and Justin bowed their heads respectfully. “We won’t let you down.” Taryn said. Her voice was calm but filled with conviction.
Justin’s amber eyes met mine. “We’re ready.” He said, tone steady, unwavering.
I smiled faintly, feeling a sense of relief and pride. “Good. You’re now officially part of Moonflare.”
Asher stepped forward, crouching slightly to ruffle our son’s hair as he toddled toward the new members. “Welcome to the pack.” He said, smiling warmly. “You’ll find that Moonflare isn’t just about strength. It’s about family.”
The rest of the day passed with a lightness that hadn’t been present since Lydia’s reign. Wolves trained alongside Taryn and Justin, learning from their skills, observing their instincts, and building trust. The packhouse felt alive with laughter, energy, and quiet accomplishment.
Later, as twilight crept over the forest, I found a quiet moment with Asher. “They did well.” I murmured, watching Taryn and Justin practice coordinated maneuvers with younger wolves. “They’ll fit in faster than I expected.”
Asher nodded, pulling me close. “Moonflare is growing stronger every day. And with them here, we’re even better prepared for whatever comes next.”
I smiled, resting my head against his chest. “I think… I think we’re finally reaching a point where the pack isn’t just surviving. We’re thriving.”
He kissed the top of my head softly. “And we’ll keep thriving, together. Always.”
