Rex, for his part, hadn’t noticed a single thing that passed between Jimmy and Harry. His attention had already drifted somewhere it didn’t quite belong.
He’d been wanting to get a word in with Julia. But Franklin was right there, smiling that relaxed smile of his, standing beside her like it was the most natural thing in the world. Rex hadn’t seen the two of them show up to the same place in a while, and seeing them now, side by side, easy and comfortable together, it looked exactly like two people who had never had a single problem between them.
But Rex knew something. And knowing it made the whole picture feel wrong.
Franklin and Maggie. He’d seen it with his own eyes. There was no talking himself out of that.
What he couldn’t wrap his head around was how Franklin could do what he did and still stand there looking at Julia like that, attentive and devoted, like he had nothing to hide. The whole thing looked perfect. And to Rex, that was the most offensive part. Because that “perfect” was built on a lie.
He let his eyes land on Franklin, deliberate but casual enough to pass for nothing. His voice dropped half a degree. “Wilson, we’ll have to find time to talk later.”
Franklin gave no indication that he’d caught anything beneath the surface of that. His smile stayed easy, his tone unbothered. “Absolutely. Let’s catch up.”
Jimmy and Rex turned and disappeared into the crowd shortly after.
Once they were gone, Levi couldn’t hold it in anymore. He leaned toward Daphne, lowering his voice like he was sharing classified information, though his expression was pure gossip. “Wait, so you and Jimmy actually went on a setup date? He’s a serious catch. What happened? Why didn’t it work out?”
Daphne’s smile had dimmed the moment Harry walked back over. She let Levi’s question sit for a second before answering, her voice even, like she was describing something that had nothing to do with her. “He said he already had feelings for someone else.”
Levi’s eyes went wide. “Seriously? What are the odds?”
Daphne just made a soft sound of agreement and left it at that.
Harry knew exactly who Jimmy’s someone else was. The thought moved through him and was gone. He didn’t say
