Chapter 680
Chapter 680
Julia had picked up on it earlier, during those few seconds when Jimmy and Harry bad exchanged their que loaded greeting. She recognized the shape of it, two people who understood each other without having to say so, each holding something back, each carrying the same thing in silence.
Now, hearing what Daphne said, she still didn’t speak. She just paused, almost without thinking, and glanced over at
Franklin.
Franklin looked perfectly at ease, same as always. He watched the direction Jimmy and Rex had gone for just a moment, a small smile still on his face, then smoothly shifted gears and started chatting with Harry about something
else entirely.
Across the room, Yves had come with Jimmy and Rex, but he’d stepped away to take a call. By the time he got back, the other two had already made their rounds over to Franklin’s corner. He hung back a little, let his eyes travel over to where Franklin and Julia were standing, and made a sound low in his throat, somewhere between a sigh and a scoff.
“If we didn’t know what we know,” he said, keeping his voice down, his tone sliding into something dry and pointed, “you’d really think those two were the real deal. Look at them. All cozy.” He paused. “But then again…”
He didn’t finish the sentence. He didn’t have to.
Jimmy had heard the story before, from Rex and Yves both. They’d seen Franklin with another woman. That woman was Maggie. Rex had barely been able to keep the edge out of his voice when he told it, and Jimmy had understood why. Some things don’t just slide off.
But Franklin’s situation wasn’t really any of Jimmy’s business. He hadn’t asked for details when he first heard about it, and he had no intention of weighing in now. He just listened as Yves brought it back up, his expression staying calm, quiet, uninvested.
Some things, once you know them, you just know. What happens next was never going to be up to him anyway.
Rex caught a glimpse of Maggie through a gap in the crowd.
He’d already clocked that Jimmy had zero interest in gossip. There was a particular kind of polite distance Jimmy put on when he was done with a conversation, present enough to seem like he was listening, but clearly not taking anything in. Under normal circumstances, Rex would’ve let it go. But this wasn’t normal circumstances. If Franklin had just been stepping out with some random woman, sure, that was gossip. Tabloid fodder. Nothing worth dragging Jimmy into.
But the person Franklin had been with was not some random woman. And Rex had a feeling that if Jimmy knew whe it actually was, he wouldn’t be nearly so indifferent.
