Zeke came running out–don’t know from where–holding a stick, standing between me and them.
‘Nobody move!”
I shoved him aside. “Vivian sent you, didn’t she?”
Zeke’s body went rigid.
The guy’s expression shifted. He laughed awkwardly. “Smart girl.”
I pulled out my phone.
‘I already called the cops. They’ll be here any minute. Leave now while you still can.”
Zeke stepped forward. “You know Harrington Global, right? I’m the future CEO. Walk away now, or when the police get here, I’ll
have our legal team bury you so deep you’ll never see daylight again.”
The men exchanged glances. Then left.
The tension broke. I helped Quinn–who could barely stand–back inside.
The silence was suffocating. Zeke spoke first.
‘Harper, I’m sorry. I didn’t think it would go this far. I dragged you into this mess. I’ll pay for everything–double.”
I laughed bitterly.
‘Zeke, is that how you rich people see us? Like we’re just playthings?”
He panicked, waving his hands.
lost it.
What did I do to deserve being your game piece? Tell me! I’ll fix it! Even if I was wrong–these five years, everything I gave you–wasn’t that enough? Why do you keep torturing me? Now even my friends are getting dragged into your bullshit!”
Are we really that worthless to you? Or do you just get off on messing with me?”
My chest heaved.
Leke covered his face, sobbing.
Harper, I swear that’s not it. I know I was a monster before. But these past five years, being with you every day–I fell for you. For
‘eal.”
went quiet.
Then I’m begging you. Take whatever feelings you have left for me and let me go. Please.”
When I Stanned Playding the Fool

My tears now mirrored that night I begged him to say he loved me. The memory hit him like a freight train.
Zeke thought: If I’d just said it that night–would she have stayed?
