Chapter 4
They dragged me back to the villa. Threw me in the basement.
My wounds–untreated, festering–ate away at me like poison.
Soon, fever took over. My whole body felt like it was coming apart.
But when Kieran came down to interrogate me, I still held my head up. Refused to break.
I didn’t do it. I won’t take the blame for something I didn’t do.”
Furious, Kieran cut off my food and water.
Three days. Nothing.
By the time I was barely conscious, the basement door opened.
Cina walked in, smiling.
When she saw me, her face lit up with triumph.
‘Evelyn. You’re pathetic. Kieran doesn’t love you anymore. And yet you’re still protecting Virex.”
Too bad for you–as long as Virex exists, so does your shadow in his heart. So I guess I’ll just have to destroy it completely.”
Hearing her mock everything I’d built–I snapped.
Lunged at her. Slapped her hard.
Tina hadn’t expected me to fight back. Her cheek swelled instantly. She hit the ground.
Kieran came running.
Tina threw herself into his arms, sobbing.
Kieran, I just wanted to talk to Evelyn–convince her not to ruin Virex out of spite.”
But she attacked me! Said Virex was hers anyway, so she had every right to destroy it…”
Before she even finished, Kieran’s eyes locked on me.
ike he wanted to tear me apart.
Virex is my life’s work. Anyone who tries to destroy it–I’ll make them pay.”
He waved his hand.
A guard brought in a steel whip. Soaked in salt water.
Chapter 4
Virex is my life’s work too–I would never-”
He didn’t let me finish.
The whip cracked down.
couldn’t breathe.
One lash. Then another. And another.
Like he was pouring every ounce of hatred into me.
By the time he stopped, I was covered in blood. Barely alive.
But even then, he wasn’t done.
He glared down at me.
‘Evelyn. Remember this. This is what happens when you betray me.”
Then he turned. Took Tina by the hand. Walked her toward the stairs.
The way he held her–gentle, protective–like she was something precious.
I closed my eyes.
Started counting down the days until I could leave for good.
When I opened them again, I was in the villa bedroom.
Every inch of my body screamed in pain.
A reminder: Kieran wasn’t the man I’d loved anymore.
The door opened.
Kieran walked in and saw my pale face.
His pupils flickered for a second, but he quickly looked away and spoke coldly.
Tina’s the Chief Designer at Virex now. She’s planning a new product line.”
‘Problem is, we’re short on materials. The stones you used for the rings–those are perfect.”
‘Give me the other ring. Do that, and I’ll let this whole betrayal thing slide.”
I stared at him, then let out a hollow laugh that made him visibly uneasy.
He opened his mouth to say something, but I was already pulling the ring off my bloodstained finger and handed it to him without
hesitation.
He froze.
Chapter 4
Like he hadn’t expected me to give it up so easily.
He gripped the ring tight in his palm. After a long pause, he spoke again, his voice hesitant.
“Evelyn. Tina and 1–we only got married because I lost that bet. Don’t misunderstand.”
